But in those days, at the peak of his career, in between classics like Viva Hate and Your Arsenal, it did feel a bit underwhelming.

I completely agree. However, it wasn't due to the musicianship on the record, rather the quality of the songs and the production.
It boils down to the usual conclusion: Morrissey has the right to pick whoever he wants to play with. The audience has the right to emphasize when he has sub-par musicians.

No, I mean quite the opposite. Morrissey should have real professional musicians who don't miss a beat, don't mess up songs and are able to play past solo and Smiths parts. Marr is a genius, but it's not that hard to play his part live. I just think, like I wrote, he has zero affinity in picking proper musicians.
Now that I think about it, the best and most decent musicians Morrissey had were all pre-Lads, as Street, Winstanley etc had access proper studio musicians from the UK.

No doubt musically Viva Hate is brilliant... but could he have toured with those musicians? Wasn't that the problem? He needed a band he could take on the road and eventually found the Lads. While a bit rough in the beginning they did vastly improve. He has yet to improve on Alain and Boz.

I remember that thread and it's over 20 years ago now . This was regarding his playing live. Which I believe he didn't do after 2004 (until again in 2022 I believe). However, his songs still appeared on ROTT and YOR. So was he still considered 'part of the band' just not playing live? Was there ever any reason given why he appears on YOR but not on WPINOYB? I know this has all been covered before but I don't remember it.

Alain was still considered irreplaceable at the time. From Moz's True-To-You Q&A 2006...

There are no Boz songs on this album, but strangely, it is the album on which Boz has been most involved and had such a massive input. Boz is 24-hour non-stop, and if impetus lulls, Boz steers everyone back on track.
If it seems to some people that Jesse has replaced Alain, I would like to say that this isn't true. There is no replacing and there is nothing but harmony amongst all the players. I understand that there are always poisonous assumptions on the SoLow site, but that's all just crap."

I think it's not hate, it's that many of us don't accept it, we compare it, and many of us prefer Alain, I prefer him re,. No one knows her to talk about hate. And hating is something very strong and negative. Poor girl, I prefer Alain W.
It's not the band I want for Morrissey, I'm a relatively new fan and I consider Grosso what Moz did with Alain/Boz B.No I can't help but miss the people on stage
