BACK TO THE OLD HOUSE

"I am well aware of the Smiths' rise in recents years, and their affirmed position in our cultural heritage. It proves how taking risks can work beautifully … and if you don't take risks when you make music then what the hell are you doing making music? I am incredibly grateful to anyone who walked out to buy, or who stayed in to download, Smiths' music. The musicians are considered to be those who make the change, but the consumer plays an equal part by having faith. We're all in this together. It was always about a refusal to surrender to enemy propaganda - something I still face today just as much as I faced it in 1983, 84, 85, 86 and 87. The Smiths do not end."

MORRISSEY.

The Smiths/Morrissey

Great thing is (apart from the Smiths) They are all still active. I’m seeing New Order at their home town gig in a couple of weeks, although not keen on big outdoor to be honest. There will be 30k at Wythenshawe, I’m sure Johnny will enjoy it seeing as he lived there for a while.
Do you include JD with New Order?

Yes and seeing Hooky on their first UK date after their North American tour. Buzzcocks is how I got into JD as I saw them twice in a week when they supported Buzzcocks.
That’s great. I think JD is on my top 5, as well.

It’s true that I’m not the same sort of fan as you, ie a cultist who worships every word he says and get off on looking at pictures of his goddamn dimples. I love a lot of what he’s done and at the same time I am not afraid to admit when he’s an idiot. Like I and many people with me have tried to explain to you and your fellow cultists: it’s possible to be a fan and still express criticism. You don’t have to worship Morrissey or any pop idol as a god.
This is a truly idiotic comment, and none of it is even true - but it’s the usual fallback from you because there's literally nothing you can say to explain away or to excuse, or to even mitigate the tiniest bit, your codependency and infinite attachment to your own negative feelings toward him, or about him, or toward what he does, or whatever. If you think you’re “invested” in him because you were “previously a long time ago invested” in him, which as i recall is the way you once put it, then I would say - i think you should get some therapy!

I don’t think Morrissey’s perfect, or worship every word he says. You’re ridiculous, but maybe you’re projecting, because maybe that’s how you used to feel?

I don’t think any of those things about him at all, in part because I do sincerely recognize, and I will be the first one to hold up my hand and admit that I’m not perfect - therefore WHY would i ever hold him, or anyone else at all for that matter, to a higher standard than i can even hold myself?:crazy::crazy: Is this all just too much advanced thinking for you today? Because this is what a well balanced, reasonable adult stance looks like.

I don’t go to write thousands of posts over decades on the sites of any people I’m disappointed in or no longer interested in - because this is also what a well balanced, reasonable adult behavior looks like.

Sadly, tiny jokes and inoffensively intended little sweet teases about his dimples don’t even begin to make even the tiniest DENT in the constant negativity here - i guess that would be too easy!

Now - do you have any other stupid comments and false claims to make about me, that you’d like me to equally debunk, together with a little dose of reality for you?

It’s too bad I can’t make out any dimps on this cute photo on the mag, but I was slightly distracted at first glance because when i saw the thumbnail for a sec in my head i was like,…. i never knew Johnny only comes up to Mozzy’s armpit!!! Lol. I’m not distracted anymore now though so - breathe easy! I am fully occupying my role and have my undivided and full attention back on dimp patrol. So…. BREATHE EASY!!

I don’t know why this is so difficult for you to understand. I love much of his work and historically he’s been immensely important to me, and I am still very interested in him and his output even though I don’t agree with much of what he says or does anymore. This shouldn’t be controversial or hard to understand.

Well, you behave as if you do. Like a cult member.

I don’t think this is advanced thinking at all. You seem to think, however, that being a fan and expressing criticism is very advanced.

I’ve never said I’m not interested in him anymore, have I? And again, for the millionth time: it’s possible to be a fan and be critical of and disappointed in the same person. It’s not just blind adoration.

Yes, indeed. The only mentions of the Smiths during my youth was hearing and liking the cover of "Stop me if you think that you heard this one before" (I didn't know it was a cover at the time)

As well as hearing a "How soon is now?" cover as the opening song of the TV show Charmed, which my mom and I watched every day after school.

I didn't know either of these were Smiths songs until I started listening to them last year. It's crazy to me.

Also, about 4 or 5 years ago on Spotify, "Interesting Drug" played on a playlist I was listening to and I ended up putting it on my Liked Songs playlist. ❤️ I never delved further into Morrissey after hearing it, though. Not until I heard The Smiths last year on someone's Instagram story, "Heaven knows I'm miserable".. then figure out.. oh shit.. THAT is Morrissey!

It's been love and admiration ever since.
It's practically all I listen to now.. about 95%.

Same here. I first learnt about The Smiths through Charmed, the film Never been kissed and the t.A.T.u cover. I had no idea who Morrissey was at that time.

A lovely, lovely statement from Moz. To look at the photo and remember that Andy isn't with us anymore, and he didn't even get to 60 years old.. God. Incredibly sad and really makes you feel the passing of time.

I’m still a fan, I’ve never said otherwise (even though he is obviously much less relevant to me NOW compared to when I was younger). But to a lot of people, and to the music industry he so desperately wants to be a part of, you could argue that he is somewhat irrelevant.
Somewhat? You are very kind.

I think it's because the nouveau fan only knows the current Morrissey. They never experienced his greatness first hand. I sometimes feel sorry for them, they missed out. For example Ashley, if she thinks Morrissey is great now, imagine how in love she would have been with the late 80's, early 90's Morrissey!!!

Enemy propaganda.

A conveniently vague proposition that could apply to a whole constellation of relationships, from Alsatian cousins and friends in modern life, to the USA & co who might bomb you, and other nme rats rats rats. Who isn't somehow affected? :paranoid:

Anyway,

They don't need you feeling sorry for them.

I do regret missing out on The Smiths. Life can get in the way. In retrospect I did hear and like some of the songs. But couldn't have named the group. Then in 1987 I was with the most manipulative person I've ever known, who was playing this lovely music. "What's that?", I asked. "The Smiths", they said. And afterwards I clean forgot. I knew about the autobiography and linked it with this awkward person I had once seen interviewed. Didn't link it with those Smiths songs I'd liked. Forgot again till I heard Morrissey's music many years later. Still, I've had a year to sort all this out, and have done, I hope.

so does mozza get royalties for Smiths stuff now ? i know , unlike johnny he didnt cough up to Joyce and it went thru court , injunction on property etc . there was something said somewhere back in time about any royalties not going to him until the money was paid to joyce .
presume that must be resolved if he is now actively showing thanks for people purchasing / streaming etc ?
i work for hmv and Hatful / TQID are among our bestselling vinyl in our multibuy deal ( MIM / Smiths are good sellers too) so he/they must be making a decent amount from those albums after almost 40 years .

HMV London used to be a place of wonder...........HMV now is just embarrassing.

I sincerely believe that, although The Smiths were one of the best bands ever, they retained or increased their popularity since 1987 thanks to Morrissey's exceptional solo work. Every great Moz record up to around Ringleader helped stoke the Smiths into a blaze of glory. Maybe not so much with recent albums because these dog daze we live in an outraged society but without doubt albums like Viva Hate, Your Arsenal, Vauxhall, and Quarry fanned the fan flames. Not to mention the singles like Suedehead, Everyday, Last of The Fatuous, November, Irish Blood Pudding, First of the Gangrene, etc. Moz is not only the Mozfather, the Mozseignor, and the Maestro for Misfits but he is also the Maintenance Man for The Smiths boiler. And it's purring along nicely thanks to him and only him.

Moz knitting Smiths socks as Christmas presents also helped.

Those socks are rather wonderful.
