BACK TO THE OLD HOUSE

"I am well aware of the Smiths' rise in recents years, and their affirmed position in our cultural heritage. It proves how taking risks can work beautifully … and if you don't take risks when you make music then what the hell are you doing making music? I am incredibly grateful to anyone who walked out to buy, or who stayed in to download, Smiths' music. The musicians are considered to be those who make the change, but the consumer plays an equal part by having faith. We're all in this together. It was always about a refusal to surrender to enemy propaganda - something I still face today just as much as I faced it in 1983, 84, 85, 86 and 87. The Smiths do not end."

MORRISSEY.

Excellent update Morrissey. Enjoyed reading that very much twice. Great picture of you with the band.

so does mozza get royalties for Smiths stuff now ? i know , unlike johnny he didnt cough up to Joyce and it went thru court , injunction on property etc . there was something said somewhere back in time about any royalties not going to him until the money was paid to joyce .
presume that must be resolved if he is now actively showing thanks for people purchasing / streaming etc ?
i work for hmv and Hatful / TQID are among our bestselling vinyl in our multibuy deal ( MIM / Smiths are good sellers too) so he/they must be making a decent amount from those albums after almost 40 years .

“The Smiths do not end." More than a band, more than a cultural movement, they are also a human state of mind. In that sense, their artistic achievements have surpassed The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Sex Pistols and Leonardo da Vinci.

Even more astonishing—Morrissey made something that is Morrissey proof.

It's nice that he mentioned all of them and not his solo years. The Smiths were a movement.

I would rather go back to the old Moz. There aren’t so many bad memories there.

I sincerely believe that, although The Smiths were one of the best bands ever, they retained or increased their popularity since 1987 thanks to Morrissey's exceptional solo work. Every great Moz record up to around Ringleader helped stoke the Smiths into a blaze of glory. Maybe not so much with recent albums because these dog daze we live in an outraged society but without doubt albums like Viva Hate, Your Arsenal, Vauxhall, and Quarry fanned the fan flames. Not to mention the singles like Suedehead, Everyday, Last of The Fatuous, November, Irish Blood Pudding, First of the Gangrene, etc. Moz is not only the Mozfather, the Mozseignor, and the Maestro for Misfits but he is also the Maintenance Man for The Smiths boiler. And it's purring along nicely thanks to him and only him.

Moz knitting Smiths socks as Christmas presents also helped.

That was fun to read. Morrissey the "maintenance man”.

The Smiths are timeless and unsullied because unlike so many other seminal bands they resisted the siren call of filthy lucre to reunite. My favorite Morrissey comment on the subject of The Smiths reforming is when he said (paraphrasing here) "The only way you'll get all four of us back into the studio, is to kill us and drag the bodies in"

I love those socks!
I have to agree with you because I had never heard of The Smiths until Morrissey put out Suedehead. Of course when I found out about his former band I went out and bought all and everything I could find of The Smiths. Those songs mean just as much to me…now, today, tomorrow and always.
