BACK TO THE OLD HOUSE

"I am well aware of the Smiths' rise in recents years, and their affirmed position in our cultural heritage. It proves how taking risks can work beautifully … and if you don't take risks when you make music then what the hell are you doing making music? I am incredibly grateful to anyone who walked out to buy, or who stayed in to download, Smiths' music. The musicians are considered to be those who make the change, but the consumer plays an equal part by having faith. We're all in this together. It was always about a refusal to surrender to enemy propaganda - something I still face today just as much as I faced it in 1983, 84, 85, 86 and 87. The Smiths do not end."

A great read, if it wasn’t for that last paranoid bit about him facing enemy propaganda. Enough with the victim mentality, Moz.

so does mozza get royalties for Smiths stuff now ? i know , unlike johnny he didnt cough up to Joyce and it went thru court , injunction on property etc . there was something said somewhere back in time about any royalties not going to him until the money was paid to joyce .
presume that must be resolved if he is now actively showing thanks for people purchasing / streaming etc ?
i work for hmv and Hatful / TQID are among our bestselling vinyl in our multibuy deal ( MIM / Smiths are good sellers too) so he/they must be making a decent amount from those albums after almost 40 years .
only person who knows will be M himself.
he hasnt put out a statement saying dont buy smiths stuff for a long time.
lets hope all this is in the past and they all get what they deserve.

it wouldnt be an M statement without a dig at someone or something, its just the way he is.

I know, but it weakens the statement.

sugar minott, now theres a name i havent heard in a long time, jamaican reggae singer.
ozzy osbourne next to the smiths, talk about a mixed bag.

'having faith'

Look at how they relate to each other on stage; total trust in the other's roles.

(thanks to Name for posting that in the songs thread)

Nice little smile from Andy when he's enjoying Johnny dancing with Morrissey (5:39)

Special clip that.

Also worth noting is the brilliance of all the playing, but particularly astonishing to me is Morrissey's vocal melody and how he constructs that throughout. In particular the warbling section at the end, as the band continue to play.

Pure unadulterated genius on display for all to see.

How is it paranoid? He faced being silenced then - The Smiths were labelled as supporting paedophilia which could have destroyed their career before it began and were also labelled 'far left' and 'pro IRA' on occasion - and he has faced being silenced now for expressing various 'controversial' opinions. Paranoia is the irrational belief that people are out to get you, with no basis in fact. There are indeed some facts to back up Moz's belief.

The Smiths are timeless and unsullied because unlike so many other seminal bands they resisted the siren call of filthy lucre to reunite. My favorite Morrissey comment on the subject of The Smiths reforming is when he said (paraphrasing here) "The only way you'll get all four of us back into the studio, is to kill us and drag the bodies in"

Tbh you’d only really need a Morrissey and Marr reunion for it to sound the bit. That can still happen, thankfully.

In Morrissey’s world, anyone not kissing his feet is against him and out to get him. He made some remarks that some people disagreed with and because of that faced some backlash. Add to that his far below par albums of the past ten years (his biggest sin in my book) and it’s easy to see why he’s not that relevant anymore. I’m sure the industry would find it easier to forgive him if he at least made albums that people liked. I stand by my statement: Morrissey should stop playing the victim.

Morrissey on why “The Smiths do not end”: “It was always about a refusal to surrender to enemy propaganda”

It comes after he claimed that he was being deleted from the “essence” of The Smiths earlier this year.

Added to OP.

Its a nice/strange statement. Have the Smiths risen particularly in recent years or have they been considered culturally important for several decades now? Why acknowledge it now? Perhaps now is the time to let go of the bitterness, reach out to Johnny and bite the lip on that bigmouth.

Clearly, he’s so totally irrelevant that you are here writing hundreds and hundreds of pages and thousands of posts every year of your life about how not relevant he is to you anymore! 🤣 Cute!

I’m still a fan, I’ve never said otherwise (even though he is obviously much less relevant to me NOW compared to when I was younger). But to a lot of people, and to the music industry he so desperately wants to be a part of, you could argue that he is somewhat irrelevant.

They don’t know what they’re missing out on by snubbing him.
