BACK TO THE OLD HOUSE

"I am well aware of the Smiths' rise in recents years, and their affirmed position in our cultural heritage. It proves how taking risks can work beautifully … and if you don't take risks when you make music then what the hell are you doing making music? I am incredibly grateful to anyone who walked out to buy, or who stayed in to download, Smiths' music. The musicians are considered to be those who make the change, but the consumer plays an equal part by having faith. We're all in this together. It was always about a refusal to surrender to enemy propaganda - something I still face today just as much as I faced it in 1983, 84, 85, 86 and 87. The Smiths do not end."

MORRISSEY.

From what I’ve heard of Bonfire Of Teenagers and Without Music The World Dies via YouTube clips of concert footage, he never stopped making great albums.
I have a feeling a lot of people might disagree.

I'm still blown away by that. Just very recently, you lived in a world where Morrissey and The Smiths didn't exist! Surreal. You missed EVERYTHING.
Yes, indeed. The only mentions of the Smiths during my youth was hearing and liking the cover of "Stop me if you think that you heard this one before" (I didn't know it was a cover at the time)

As well as hearing a "How soon is now?" cover as the opening song of the TV show Charmed, which my mom and I watched every day after school.

I didn't know either of these were Smiths songs until I started listening to them last year. It's crazy to me.

Also, about 4 or 5 years ago on Spotify, "Interesting Drug" played on a playlist I was listening to and I ended up putting it on my Liked Songs playlist. ❤️ I never delved further into Morrissey after hearing it, though. Not until I heard The Smiths last year on someone's Instagram story, "Heaven knows I'm miserable".. then figure out.. oh shit.. THAT is Morrissey!

It's been love and admiration ever since.
It's practically all I listen to now.. about 95%.

Morrissey fans enjoy his interiority. Everyone else flops around in their desolate anomie. I had to look up those words ‘interiority’ and ‘anomie’ last evening while reading an article about James Baldwin posted by goinghome. Great words. Great article.

No, that’s simply not true. Not everyone else. Morrissey is not the world. There’s a whole universe out there of profound, fabulous and subversive artists. You have to have a very poor understanding of music to think that he’s the only one who’s real, authentic or not a sell-out.

It’s never too late. There’s no real merit in having been a fan since day one. What’s important is what you feel and what the music does to you.

You must be what, 20 years old?

Yes "there’s a whole universe" that Morrissey loves articulately with every dust fibre of his consciousness evidently. Who dances like that? Only Morrissey, so far, with this little guy finally giving him some burgeoning competition.

This is what's great about Youtube. It's the closest we can get to a time machine - a second chance to experience all the great stuff we missed out on the first time.

I’m still a fan, I’ve never said otherwise (even though he is obviously much less relevant to me NOW compared to when I was younger). But to a lot of people, and to the music industry he so desperately wants to be a part of, you could argue that he is somewhat irrelevant.
Errrrr, you are unintentionally always hilarious! Because you are completely codependent with your own disappointment in him and your own perceived disapproval of what he says, does, and creates. That’s not a synonym for fan, if i pull out a thesaurus, fyi. Neither is being fixated on telling people how irrelevant someone is, lol

Agree, they were probably my 5th favourite band when I saw them back in the day and Moz/The Smiths are probably my 5th favourite artist/band today.

It’s true that I’m not the same sort of fan as you, ie a cultist who worships every word he says and get off on looking at pictures of his goddamn dimples. I love a lot of what he’s done and at the same time I am not afraid to admit when he’s an idiot. Like I and many people with me have tried to explain to you and your fellow cultists: it’s possible to be a fan and still express criticism. You don’t have to worship Morrissey or any pop idol as a god.

There was a time when he was number one on my list, but not anymore. Actually, that’s a long time ago. I find it harder and harder to relate. Not to the themes, but to how they’re expressed. But historically, there’s no denying his importance to me. And I’ll probably always be a fan.

Now, rattle off your top 5!

Buzzcocks
New Order
Echo &The Bunnymen
James
The Smiths/Morrissey

Great thing is (apart from the Smiths) They are all still active. I’m seeing New Order at their home town gig in a couple of weeks, although not keen on big outdoor to be honest. There will be 30k at Wythenshawe, I’m sure Johnny will enjoy it seeing as he lived there for a while.
