Quite. You have to be thick skinned at times for this place. It's like swimming with sharks. Nastiness to Morrissey and nastiness to others is often the order of the day. I think most social media is similar though to be honest. Online interaction definitely seems to reduce basic civility.

And it’s coming from a few very specific accounts. We all know who. It’s not a wide spread issue still which is reassuring.

The bit about cell phones was very telling and I feel for performers dealing with the zombie phone crowds. Hit song = a million phones up and recording. New material = no phones and blank stares. Very noticeable.
The irony is, there are already several thousand videos of 'How Soon is Now' or 'Jack the Ripper' on YouTube, but these are the ones people will repeatedly record and post. When Morrissey pulls out something obscure out of his back pocket that might be a one-off or of actual historical value - nobody cares. I remember a few years back when he suddenly played 'Fantastic Bird' at a couple of shows - good luck finding any videos of that one. :(

Honest question, who are you all going to see who are playing dynamic setlists each night over the course of a tour? In the last 2 years, I’ve seen contemporaries of Morrissey (Squeeze two summers in a row, Psych Furs, Duran Duran, Boy George, Echo & The Bunnymen, Depeche Mode 4x over 2 years) and guess what…same setlist, entire tours across multiple years. Same with U2 for the last several tours. And as a fan of Elbow, I saw them play the exact same setlist for the last entire tour. No change in order, no different songs from any of them. Noel Gallagher is playing largely the same setlist night after night (he changes it up slightly less than Morrissey does, slight song order, random new song). I guess I wonder how or why Morrissey is held to a standard none of these other bands are? Or who IS playing a dynamic setlist from one night to the next that I’m just not seeing?

James are the only band I see regularly who make lots of changes night after night, although last year The National played 2 nights at Alexandra Palace and played 30 songs on the first night and 30 completely different songs on the second night, which is some feat!

Yes, I think it's true for the vast majority of acts of a certain age that they stick to a similar set for each tour. Morrissey changes his set a lot more than most.

I have watched Madness, Paul McCartney, Duran Duran, Helloween, The Proclaimers, The Beach Boys, Tom Jones etc. and they all have plenty of songs that they play night after night.

It's true, most pop groups stick to very similar setlists throughout their tours. I saw one a couple of weeks ago who played identical songs to their tour in January.
Morrissey probably mixes up his songs on average slightly more than most so whatever crimes he's committing these days, a lack of setlist flexibility is not one of them.

I think it's fine that he doesn't change the setlist from night to night all that often. A different issue is the songs he's choosing to play in the first place. A lot of those bands you mentioned care a lot more about what their fans want to hear and play sets that reflect that. Depeche Mode and The Cure who I also saw on their recent tours are always great about having setlists that span their careers and include fan favorites. Having said that I've been to many shows starting in 1991 and there was only once where I left truly disappointed in the show.

I agree with what you say, but there are some people who won't be happy no matter what set is played.

Some complain about him singing new songs but if there were no new songs, they would say it was a nostalgia show.

Some complain about hearing the classics like How Soon is Now? and Everyday is Like Sunday but if he sang no hits, they would complain that there was no atmosphere...

I made the mistake of seeing Depeche Mode two nights in a row recently at two different stadiums from similar views of the stage. David Gahan was like a robot. Every move is choreographed, even the ones where he’s waving to the crowd. It was actually kinda creepy. Morrissey makes similar gestures show after show but he doesn’t take a choreographed route during each song. I know lights and all but still it really bummed me out.

I'd rate Alain as the 3rd best songwriter Morrissey ever worked with after Johnny and Street (#1 in terms of volume). It's a shame we won't get to hear the new material they wrote together (or so it seems).

Won't mind hearin' all of it either.
Wonder if that Suspicious Minds
cover is gonna make the cut.
People didn't seem to like Notre Dame,
which I think was a Alain song, so maybe
it'll be for the better.

Dave really is robotic. I was lucky enough to see Depeche Mode at the 550 capacity Bowery Ballroom in NYC, thinking it was going to be amazing. It wasn’t. Their cases took up 1/4 of the floor of the club, and Dave just didn’t know what to do in a small room… all his moves that make sense in stadiums, suddenly didn’t. I preferred seeing them in arenas. I saw Morrissey there too and he seemed to love that it was so small. It was a great show.

Of course it is choreographed, it’s a show, particularly a stadium show. For someone like Dave Gahan who is not particularly graceful it is very useful. And as you mentioned, the lighting is programmed to coincide with stage moves.
