James are the only band I see regularly who make lots of changes night after night, although last year The National played 2 nights at Alexandra Palace and played 30 songs on the first night and 30 completely different songs on the second night, which is some feat!
Several years back Mike Peters of The Alarm would do Saturday night residencies in NYC in the summer and for 4 hours straight played nothing but the requests we shouted out. It was insane, but I don’t know anyone else would could do that, either that degree of randomness or for that long!

I think it's fine that he doesn't change the setlist from night to night all that often. A different issue is the songs he's choosing to play in the first place. A lot of those bands you mentioned care a lot more about what their fans want to hear and play sets that reflect that. Depeche Mode and The Cure who I also saw on their recent tours are always great about having setlists that span their careers and include fan favorites. Having said that I've been to many shows starting in 1991 and there was only once where I left truly disappointed in the show.
I posted this last year when a similar topic came up:

Personal example: I followed U2 from 1987 - 2009 over 32 shows. I am admittedly a geek and kept a spreadsheet of all the songs I heard at each show. For those who don't know, U2 always play a ridiculously static setlist. If you see them multiple shows over one tour, you will see the exact same setlist almost without change, not even changing the order. Maybe on the 4th night of 4 at MSG or Boston, you'll get an oddity, but that's it. I've followed M from 2012 - present. When I hit show #32, I compared the number of songs I had heard him play to that point (again from my spreadsheet) and I'd heard almost twice as many songs following Morrissey in 6 1/2 years (when I hit show #32) than I did following U2 over 22 years!

So while you may not love his song choice he’s playing a LOT more songs than at least one top 40 act selling out stadiums.

who's in the t shirt?

I’ve been to the last several DM tours and with the exception of maybe 4-5 songs from the album they just released it’s entirely a greatest hits tour. No deep cuts, no b-sides, no surprises. If Morrissey did that, he’d be crucified here. But then he plays something like Black Cloud and he’s crucified here. #cantwinonSolo

I made the mistake of seeing Depeche Mode two nights in a row recently at two different stadiums from similar views of the stage. David Gahan was like a robot. Every move is choreographed, even the ones where he’s waving to the crowd. It was actually kinda creepy. Morrissey makes similar gestures show after show but he doesn’t take a choreographed route during each song. I know lights and all but still it really bummed me out.
That would bum me out too, lol. Totally lame. Well maybe not TOTALLY lame - Im sure things get repetitive night after night, but one would imagine at least “the moves” are spontaneous. Guess not!

there's a shit ton more in the middle of your two extreme examples that he could play that would make people a whole lot happier.

I do think this is most of the issue, he doesn't play the songs fans want to hear, especially original fans, which I think it why he's lost a lot of his fan base and plays smaller venues. The new fans can't possibly understand this, there is a huge different between his live performances then and now as well, esp with the inferior band.

Super stale setlists at this point, for anyone who has seen him in the last 4 years.
Just look at the lack of posts in here when it could be so different, we still want him to win and turn things around…

Spring Heeled Jim has gone already :LOL:

Krays T-shirt but no Playboys… c’mon Moz!!

Can’t believe the Marr / Smiths fallout hasn’t been reflected in what he’s chosen or not chosen to sing live since… apart from HSIN which was long overdue a break anyway.
I wasn’t expecting Angel Angel or Break up the Family but it’s literally business as usual lol
Give us something to show he isn’t just phoning it in
I was wondering the same thing, why is there a Krays tshirt when he didn't play Playboys or even a James Dean tshirt when he didn't play Suedehead.
And I also wondered why he doesn't add more Smiths to the setlist since he's been whining he's been erased from the Smiths. If Johnny is the only person who is going to keep the songs alive, then obviously he is the custodian of the legacy.

There have been a lot of complaints about him reusing very similar setlists, but as someone who has yet to see him live, I honestly wouldn't care what he plays if/when I get to see him. It could be the worst setlist of his life, the band could butcher all the songs, he could perform Frankie Valli-style, but I'd probably still be satisfied. And I'm not a sycophant or a new fan. It likely wouldn't inspire me to keep attending future dates, though.
If you've never seen him, it's understandable you'd want the experience even if it was not going to be the greatest
