Camila.

Awful. His self-indulgence and megalomania have no boundaries.
No one does agruved d idolatry and projected martyrdom quite like Morrissey, In earlier eras there was at least some level of cheeky humor and self-awareness.

He seems to have completely bought into the idea that he is being "silenced" and that his art is suppressed whether because of intentional nefarious efforts and oppressive forces and executives or because the "truths" of his art are too much for docile masses to process That people might have intelligible reasons to reject and recoil from his behavior his statements, and the quality of the songs themselves are not things that seems to have occurred to him.

Something like "I Ex Love You" is a jaunty very Smithian tune, but those lyrics and that vocal performance are flat, repetitive, and unremarkable

This backdrop is just as cringeworthy as the picture of James Baldwin and the Unloveable lyrics.

But hey. Art is art, And some folks will think these are his best songs, (which they have likely said about Dog, and every Album he's released, much as Morrissey himself has also always insisted - only to edit songs and album artwork retroactively.

Folks might find Cavaziel Christ Backdrop is some kind of profundi cultural statement, or deeply emotional touchstone. May they continue to find their joy in it.

So. I Ex-Love You…

It’s Morrissey writing from the point of view of the fans who have had enough of him, and no longer love him.

He’s written his own “cancellation” song.

Applaud that.

Nobody knows he has a drink problem, so you're just making things up.
Marr has hinted at it in several past interviews over the years... also, if you've had close family/relatives who were functioning alkies (and I grew up with 2) you can generally spot it in others. I doubt he's still drinking gin by the gallon as per Noel and Liam Gallagher's anecdotes, but the general lack of energy and his offstage behaviour suggests he's anything but the 'glass or two of claret with dinner on Friday night' casual either.

I don't want to hear anything past The Smiths and Your Arsenal for a while, and I especially do not want to hear these new songs.
I saw so many people on twitter complaining about the setlist tonight, no one wants to hear this crap he is playing and it's showing in that he cannot sell out these shows and some aren't even close to sold out.
He also needs to get rid of his diversity hires.
well you wont mind providing proof of the crap setlist.

f***ing hell, that’s awful. Who hired this band, the Estate Agent?
annie walker likes it,can see her dancing away in the background.
they have jazzed it up a bit, nothing wrong with that.

The last time Marr had anything to do with Moz he was the one with a drinking problem. What a load of bollocky conjecture.

Or it could just mean he's having trouble with any number of other physical problems that come with age.

For example, lots of people browse YouTube more often if their mobility is restricted for whatever reason.

Trolls = people who point out the obvious.
Wreck what's left of his career? He's just started a successful tour with multiple sell out dates
Thats one way of looking at it. Another is that selling out Rochester, NY while having two unreleased LPs he turned down the only deal on the table for, is denial in action.

A lot of the alt-right commentators Morrissey has aligned himself with in recent years have leaned heavily into the Christianity angle, so there may be some mileage in that. However, I think the backdrop is just standard 'Morrissey comparing himself to Christ' stuff he's been doing for years.

Interesting thanks.

I suppose I just wondered if it was more to do with his advancing years and potentially challenging medical issues.

I am reminded of Brideshead again, but this time Lord Marchmain, who had a less than conventional relationship with his faith, until the end....

Excerpt from Spark Notes:

Bridey returns when Lord Marchmain’s condition deteriorates. He insists that his father should have a priest perform his last rites. Charles is appalled that the family wants to force religion on Lord Marchmain.

Lord Marchmain appears to be at death’s door, and Julia calls for Father McKay. Charles asks the doctor to stop her because the shock might kill Lord Marchmain, but the doctor refuses. When Father McKay arrives, Charles asks him if he thinks Lord Marchmain can really be saved. Father McKay believes grace makes anything possible.

Father McKay asks Lord Marchmain to make a sign if he’s repented of his sins. Charles sees Julia praying and hopes, because he loves her, that Lord Marchmain will offer a sign. Finally, Lord Marchmain makes the sign of the cross.

Of particular interest is that Morrissey has previously made a comment which aligns with the events of that novel:

SAM:
Does this mean your faith has gone?

M:
It can’t because Catholicism takes an unshakable root. It’s not like collecting stamps. You might very well become atheist but the final words you utter will still be ‘dear God, please help me’… unless you’re Christopher Hitchens.

Maybe even he doesn’t have confidence in the pish that he presents these days and has decided to self-sabotage and declare himself a cancelled hero, rather than release that … bilge … and be revealed as a has-been.

I don’t even think MOZI is the problem. It’s that band he has assembled/been left with. Would Leonardo da Vinci be considered such a great artist if he was exclusively dealing in the medium of shit?
I’ve tried it. The museums won’t touch my stuff.

I was amused at the question posed by one poster earlier in the thread about why some former band members are touring together. I would have thought the reason for that was obvious. They are most famous for their association with Morrissey and they hope that some people will come to see them play because of it.

The same goes for Boz recording an album of Moz covers.

As Morrissey is a solo artist, he can tour with whoever he wants in his backing band and could change members every tour if he wished to. As it happens, people like Jesse and Matt Walker have been around for years anyway...

Morrissey still sounds in good voice from the videos that I have heard and I don't think there can be too many serious complaints about the setlist.

Obviously we could all discuss which of our favorite songs were not sung, but material was chosen from a wide variety of his original solo albums.

1988 - 1 song
1991 - 1
1992 - 2
1994 - 1
1995 - 0
1997 - 1
2004 - 3
2006 - 3
2009 - 0
2014 - 0
2017 - 1
2020 - 1
Newer stuff - 4

21 original songs is nothing to be sniffed at. A few years ago he was playing slightly shorter sets and several of the songs performed were covers.

A drinking habit he eventually knocked on the head around the same time Morrissey was picking up the pace on his. They both share several close freinds, and were (until a few years ago) still in email contact with each other. Im sure he knows very well what's going on, even if its only 2nd hand info from mutual freinds.

I think it was Noel G who said he was on great terms/in regular contact until morrissey 'went a bit odd' and cut him off, again, a couple of years ago. Chrissie Hynde also said she hadn't spoken to him in months/years, again a couple of years ago (I assume they have since then).
But that kind of disjointed behaviour is common when you have depression/drinking problems... then there's Alain leaving and making polite excuses...
A diminishing social circle, increasing paranoia&bitterness, not keeping up with your oldest aquaintances... staying in clinics for 'nervous exhaustion', the silly and obviously inebriated outburst on the aer lingus flight while Damon and pals sat in silence as though it were a regular occurrence...
These are the opposite actions of a successful, wealthy, healthy person in their 60s. Nobody is haemmorraghing longstanding professional or personal relationships at that age, unless you're deliberately pushing people away your 60s is often your most socially engaged phase.
It's a shame. he has a vast back catalogue to be proud of and he should be in his wise, witty, indulgent indie Leonard Cohen phase by now. Instead he's turned into Richard LittleJohn, writing bitter lyrics devoid of the old insightful humour and wisdom, while moaning to the Torygraph about cancel culture.
