were planned for 2024 worldwide release by Warner Records along with a deluxe box release of The Smiths first album in order to commemorate its 40-year anniversary, and also a new 7-inch of This Charming Man. Warner approached Morrissey and Darren Evans to assemble artwork for all four releases, all of which were rejected and halted out of hand by J Marr.

Moz's moment of glory has already passed because time has passed, it seems that he makes the same mistakes but they no longer see him as before. I admire him a lot, for me he is a huge talent, an icon and he is a good person, but. Sometimes his huge ego appears and zasss!! Everything has a limit. Cancellations on two continents carry more weight than Morrissey realizes. One of the mistakes was not giving the slightest explanation, that is taken by people as contempt, I know people who tell me that Morrissey is crazy, I don't spend more money or time, they tell me, and it's sad that they think like that. He remains focused on the self-boycott. Perhaps getting older made him more bitter and hostile. Moz I still love you, but you have time to change some things, there's always time to change and acknowledge things

Reluctant for years?
There have been numerous reissues of singles, albums, and compilations since the court case. Just check Discogs.

No one here knows what the supposed 40th anniversary re-release would or would have not included. Just speculation.

Perhaps Marr rejected it because it added nothing new. Perhaps that should be the narrative.
I am well aware of previous Smiths reissues. However Morrissey’s involvement was limited. This time he is offering to take a front line role and to design new covers. He has also offered to tour as The Smiths.
Morrissey is keen to support Smiths back catalogue reissues.

You people should take a moment to understand that we could have had a box set reissue of the Smiths debut.

A box set.

But Johnny said no. Because to him, it's more important to distance himself from the man without whom he would be nothing rather than sign off on anything that celebrates the entire reason anyone even knows his name.

Think about the level of ego that involves.

Then go listen to him try to sing any Smiths song...and he tries often. It's cringey.

Morrissey made a name for himself without Johnny. Meanwhile Johnny's entire career has been predicated on piggybacking on the fame of others...

And don't even mention "The Healers" or that "Hi Hello" crap. It's dull as dishwater.

f*** Johnny.

Yeah, that's my take. He's tanked his own career, and has no other way of getting any interest from major labels, so he's turned desperate enough to try and resurrect The Smiths.
This is an overly negative assessment of the state of Morrissey’s career. He still tours in the US and plays top venues. The problem is simply that the major labels are reluctant to release an album because of one track which they regard as, to use common parlance, ‘non-woke’. Moreover, Morrissey having a change of heart over the Smiths is something that fans should surely celebrate.

surprised to see how forgothowigotmynames BITCH ASS NIGGA comment still hasnt been kicked into the long grass.

The truth is, we have no idea why Johnny said no. Maybe it is an act of aggression, maybe it's just because the artwork is dire, maybe it's both or something completely different. Maybe you should stop letting Morrissey manipulate your emotions to feed his OWN ego in this sad, miserable public pissing contest.

Without Johnny, we would not have the Rhino remasters set that we do have. Morrissey is only doing this because he has poisoned his own well so badly, and now he wants to shit in Johnny's like a jealous child. Wake up.

Exactly. Do we even know that Johnny has "blocked this release"? And what would this release have contained anyway? I haven't read all 400+ posts in this thread, so apologies for perhaps going over well-trodden ground, but what could we possibly gain from a new Smiths compilation? The artwork anyway is just horrible, the lack of "THE" truly hurts the eye, and that's just the start of it.

Fair enough. I should have realised that I was trying to engage with a grown adult who is pretending to be a turkey, and maybe two paragraphs was overdoing it a bit. I don't know what I was thinking.

Please don't waste ya time talkin'
to Wild T.
Ya better than that.

You wish it was because the song is non-woke, the lyrics are fairly weak, i don't like his lazy politics but there's nothing really offensive about the song, the worst thing about it is the mean spirited focus on regular folk worried about their community, there was plenty of anger and hate around after that disgusting act that he could have bathed in.

No, his album isn't released yet, because he's difficult to work with and unreliable, he has a shrinking fan base that he alienated through his fear driven casual bigotry, and even the ones who are more accepting of his outbursts get shafted when he can't be arsed to turn up to gigs they sometimes pay through the nose to attend etc. There isn't much money a record label can make out of an artist like Moz, so he needs to be reliable, graft and play the game like Marr does, or realise the world has changed and do it himself.

10 years ago i would have cared(died and gone to heaven) about the Smiths reforming but not now, Marr quit because he couldn't take anymore and that hasn't changed.

I think the levels of disappointment for many is the missing out on reengagement with their favorite band. Even if it's same old tracks, being able to purchase something new from the original artists actually collaborating with each other. But maybe that's all this is - Johnny has new income streams and status, both of which for Moz are diminishing?

Honestly, the cover is growing on me. The font has a certain Street Fighter charm in it (don't know why I thought of that, I've never even play the game) and while I thought that the title is a bit cringeworthy at first, I like the possible backstory someone on this thread told about it. I can see mozza watching this on TV when he was a kid and how that would appeal to his outsider mentality. ...
Arrrrgh! Yes I just looked at that Wiki for the Goodies Rule - O.K.? and there are striking parallels there. But like so much from the 70's the humour has dated badly. Some of the jolly guest stars are now - monsters.
Somethings should be left in the past, no matter how relevant they are.

We don't need new cover art. They're already perfect as they are, while the new ones are derivative and gawdy.

Mildly surprised that no-one has suggested the artwork (albeit I think the one shown was trolling), lends itself to that incredible pic of the young lady in a Smiths t shirt at a demo at the Houses of Parliament. I wish I could find it to include here.

Less sensibly, as to how the trolling can be augmented, I wonder if Moz could cover one of JM's recent tunes at his forthcoming shows. One with nonsense lyrics. That would be ace.

We need a The Smiths box set

Disc one - The original album (but does it include This Charming Man - I prefer not but I think the 2011 remasters retcon that)
Disc two - Troy Tate best takes, newly chosen ultimate running order and as with TQID a slightly alternate sleeve, which would require Morrissey and Marr to coordinate :-/
Disc three - a suitable live recording - Hammersmith Palais, 12 March 1984
Disc four - Odds and sods. I want a Boy for My Birthday. Other TT recordings.

Associated singles:
12" This Charming Man and versions.
12" Hand in Glove for the first time, and WITH original sleeve FFS

We can but dream.

Amazing that you can post a random picture, which has just a tangential connection with the story here, and yet it manages to contain yet another individual that Morrissey has apparently fell out with (Bill Oddie). Morrissey’s capacity for aggro is breathtaking.

Here she is, a great moment:

Would be great if M would reverently cover one of Johnny's songs, be such a welcome gesture.
