Morrissey Central "THE PLOT THICKENS" (September 15, 2024)

Trademark-Search.jpg

J Marr has successfully applied for 100% trademark rights / Intellectual Property ownership of The Smiths name. His application has been accepted on whatever oaths or proclamations he has put forward. This action was done without any consultation to Morrissey, and without allowing Morrissey the standard opportunity of 'objection'. Amongst many other things, this means that Marr can now tour as The Smiths using the vocalist of his choice, and it also prohibits Morrissey from using the name whilst also denying Morrissey considerable financial livelihood.

Morrissey alone created the musical unit name 'The Smiths' in May 1982.

I think, if she were still with us, Kirsty MacColl could have helped both of em sort something, somehow. They both thought the world of her. Alas, it was never to be.
Same applies to Chrissie Hynde, who is thankfully very much alive.

There is nobody, and no force on Earth, that will get Morrissey and Marr back together.

A good album, Hi Hello being a standout naturally as it is very Smiths - like

Patti Smiths - like. As he himself once admitted. What’s funny is that the first words Patti sings on the album Wave are ‘Hi hello’.

I could picture Liam saying something like "Oy you lot- Stop Being f***ing nobs, make some cash and give your fans a thrill
Like Liam's excellent tweeted reposte to the Wembley minishow complaints. I was wondering how he'd deal with it and was instantly reminded of a simple but effective approach. Head on, with lot of f-words.
The whole idea has gathered momentum because of the Gallaghers. Even if it was just a M&Marr join-in on their very last show's encore or something, it could be doable surely?

That is literally nightmare fuel.

I honestly wish Morrissey and Marr would just move on and stop bringing The Smiths up all together. Especially Morrissey right now..
I wonder if Morrissey has registered a trademark for his own name. If 'The Smiths' would be approved, as "any sign capable of distinguishing goods or services of one undertaking from those of other undertakings”, then why not Morrissey? Both are common names though, so I guess applicants would have to submit other distinguishing features to e.g. https://www.ipoi.gov.ie/en/understa...ets/registration-of-trademarks-english-lr.pdf

Here is a dispassionate reference to the two Smiths founders and their trajectories since - https://www.houstonpress.com/music/this-weeks-best-concerts-19009021

I’m beginning to wonder how smart Morrissey actually is. Maybe less so than I used to. His emotional intelligence is high but his perception of reality and the necessary evils of the material world, including his business affairs feels uncertain. I have some empathy as the material world is often ruthlessly predictable and transactional yet in business affairs morrissey too seems highly transactional as there are numerous rumors of unpaid collaborators and crew. Which is not okay, though admittedly some of these accounts are independently unconfirmed yet highly plausible. We attract what we are. Always.

Just to be clear I am a huge fan of Smiths/M and followed them since their fecking very early gigs in 83
During the Smiths, I always thought M was the intelligent one out of The Smiths and brighter than most NME people. By the time it got to the mid-90s, I had changed my mind and thought a lot of M's Public Image was exaggerations of the truth if I am being kind.
I used to think he was clever but just shy, so he came over as daft and odd. I'd met him here and there quite a lot by the mid-90s (not that we were fecking friends, I only had very brief chats, when he signed something, shit like that ), and I had heard so many things about him by trustworthy people and it started to be very fecking clear to me M is not very clever at all. He is artistic, has good emotional intelligence and is quite good with words but that's it. At this point, I am not sure M is even the 2nd most intelligent person in The Smiths, he seems quite dumb when compared to Jarvis and Brett and Damon and people like that. I think he knows it as well, which is why he moans about his school and tries to appear one up, all the time. It's typical behaviour from someone who struggled at school and was kind of considered simple. When you consider he used to hang around with Linder and Howard Devoto, who are clever, he probably did feel insecure

Well it's the old autism thing isn't it? "High functioning" I think refers to how people on the spectrum are able to get by but can still be quite stilted in ways most people don't have to suffer.
It does seem to be a common thing where certain bands have a creative genius at the helm, dazzling the fans on the one hand then disappointing them with the mundane everyday stuff that leads the band off a cliff or parked up in the sidings forever.
Can think of so many like this. They are usually the interesting ones, though sometimes you just wish for something more stable like U2 or Coldplay. Money machines maybe but no constant heartache to lose so much sleep over.
