were planned for 2024 worldwide release by Warner Records along with a deluxe box release of The Smiths first album in order to commemorate its 40-year anniversary, and also a new 7-inch of This Charming Man. Warner approached Morrissey and Darren Evans to assemble artwork for all four releases, all of which were rejected and halted out of hand by J Marr.

Completists aside, this clearly isn’t aimed at longstanding fans. Absolutely nothing wrong with Morrissey wanting a fresh release, and the related profile boost which could capture some new fans and their pocket money.

Free ‘Smiths Rule OK!’.

So trying to get the new young fans?
All those kids eagerly buying up physical media...

Gordy, people on here are far more nuanced views than what you give them credit for, and far more nuanced than yours. Most posters here aren't one side or the other, because they aren't children. They criticise and praise both Morrissey and Marr in equal measure, for the most part.

You are not included in this, of course. Your posts are the opposite of nuanced. They're simplistic, boot licking, semi-literate nonsense, hidden behind your "jokes".
if you say so.

This is awful behaviour by Johnny Marr. Why didn’t he offer to work with Morrissey on the cover designs and the reissues? One can only assume that he is jealous and his nose was put out of joint by Morrissey standing up to him over his use of Morrissey’s name in interviews. No excuse to block Smiths releases.

Last gig I went to I unashamedly bought two knock offs the fellas were selling outside the Ritz. £10 a pop, printed on the same type of Gildan t-shirt as the official merch and the print was just as good. Official t-shirts were £30.

That’s the thing though, they’re basically the same! Who did u see at the Ritz, it’s one of my favourite venues.

Read the thread and get back to us.

I have no need to read this thread to have an opinion on the matter. Morrissey has clearly been willing to work on the Smiths back catalogue again having been reluctant to do so for years because of the court case. The anniversary reissue of the first album may well have included the Troy Tate sessions as well. However Johnny Marr has been unwilling to cooperate. He should not be able to block releases in this manner, given that Morrissey always designed the covers to Smiths albums and singles.

This is definitely not OK. Such as sad, sad way to crash and burn a legacy. I know people say that about his politics, but for me, it's trash like this. Bad image. Bad cover. Bad fonts. Bad color choices. Stupid title. For the record: Smiths, OK! would be much stronger. (Smiths Rule sounds dorky; Smiths Rule OK [no comma] sounds like they're kings of Oklahoma.) It's just another "reissue, repackage" so he can get some quick cash in his pocket. Funds must be drying up now. Debt collectors coming? If so, probably a bad idea to cyberbully the co-creator.

suspiciously positive?

Reluctant for years?
There have been numerous reissues of singles, albums, and compilations since the court case. Just check Discogs.

No one here knows what the supposed 40th anniversary re-release would or would have not included. Just speculation.

Perhaps Marr rejected it because it added nothing new. Perhaps that should be the narrative.

What do you suppose is really going on with Morrissey? Why all of a sudden this high-profile finger pointing? My theory is he is having a financial crisis. Something is very wrong.

Maybe he was hoping to use the Smiths back catalogue as leverage to get a new contract, and now he is miffed.

Johnny is havin' one of his "me-me"
moments and Moz is just showin'
folks what it's like to deal with.
Don't forget Moz went through this
when Johnny ran away from The Smiths.

Yeah, that's my take. He's tanked his own career, and has no other way of getting any interest from major labels, so he's turned desperate enough to try and resurrect The Smiths.

Good question. Unsure about this answer, though.

Because can he really have a financial crisis . . . ?
