Andy Rourke mural unveiling in Manchester (November 21, 2024); call out for Smiths fans for interviews, photos starting Wednesday

I am coordinating the Andy Rourke mural unveiling 21 November 2024. Thursday at the Wheatsheaf Pub.

At 1.30 pm onwards today Wednesday the BBC is filming a pre record and if any fans want to be interviewed or filmed come down today (Wednesday).

Also tomo- Thursday - the main unveiling and photo call is happening 1.30 pm - please come down and be part of this very special occasion.

Mike Joyce will be down along with the artist and Smiths’ photographer Nalinee Darmong whose image is what inspired the mural.

Watched the video of Mike speaking and he did a very nice job and obviously the whole point of this project was to be very celebratory and it absolutely is, but it really caught me completely off guard that clicking on this video was going to make me feel some sadnesses that i wasn’t prepared for and didn’t even see coming earlier this norning.

I would never in a bajillion years have ever expected Morrissey or Johnny to also be there so it’s not about that in any way, shape, or form, but it was still a moment for pause for me and a moment of stark reality to see Mike standing there completely alone in front of a mural of Andy now long gone.

Every single day it is crazy to me that it is 2024, but i guess that’s just a me thing. Not like a Smiths thing. Just crazy and weird and doesn’t even feel real to me in general.

I’m glad they had such a nice result and that everyone loves it.

I’ve got a couple of rolls of lining paper in the garage, they could have had that. Would have come up a treat.

Yeah, I think they should do it again, do it properly. Strip the paint off, smooth the wall, lining paper (if you so choose), repaint, anti-vandal protection, will last for years.
