Personally, I don’t feel that Marr has ‘forced’ anyone to choose between the pair. The fans I know listen to both unproblematically, and recognise McCartney’s ostensibly glib assessment as entirely accurate: ‘that’s bands for you’.
I’m grateful for Morrissey’s definition of cancel culture, it clears some things up. But it’s not how I perceive the process of being cancelled (Robeson’s and Chaplain’s treatment meets my criteria).
Morrissey’s definition actually describes our human world—if life wasn’t like that, there would be no Morrissey, as it supposes his rebellion would be (and should be) easy, and so not really worthy of admiration.
Nevertheless, I can recover his perspective in terms of the whole—it’s very Morrissey to maintain his resistance should be uniquely cosseted, whilst Thatcher (for instance) deserves to be twatted with a baton. Or worse.
He is awful, but I like him.
