Thomas Frederick Substack Collection (July 1, 2024 -> current)

Reed originally wrote this song when still in VU. The later version on Transformer clearly is a much better version. The demo is rough and unpolished. It's a great pop song. The lyrics are simple and yet ambiguous and layered with meaning. So much going on there. About how love can take us to heaven, and yet we come back down to earth with petty worries and jealousy. Love the song. Love Transformer. Up there as one of the best albums ever made. Boy, did David Bowie do a great job on that album.

The letter to Robert Mackie was fun to read, where he says he loves the album The Bells. Am I calculating right that Morrissey was only 13 when he went to see Lou Reed?! What a wild child!

Yes, times were rougher and ready then, Lots of us at Smiths gigs were only 15 and I knew a load younger than me, My older mate said they was going to punk gigs 13. It seems about right M, going at that age. . That was the thing, lots of Boys and girls going at age 13 upward.
Sadly people took advantage of this but it was a different time

Jo Slee writes engagingly. She got the bad news last year she had cancer, and she opened a GoFundMe page, which was shared on this site. I took a look again, and she posted an update just last week, which thankfully is on the positive side, as these things go:

It's a great pic of Harvey Keitel. But I can't help but feel that there was maybe some serendipity at play here. I prefer the Richard Davalos pic that was eventually used. It's more ambiguous. The Keitel pic is too expressive. The Davalos pic leaves much more to the imagination.

If Morrissey and Marr hadn't fallen out again, this would have been perfect as an alternate cover for a massive 'Strangeways' anniversary boxset, stuffed with rarities, etc.

I think you have already posted this in the other thread (?) so it will probably be merged. I clicked on your blog and it made me think - if, in some strange universe, Johnny decided to end this silliness and reply with this pic from the same session:

I'd leave my body, I'd float through the f***ing roof and fly away. One day :guitar:
You and me both. If it happened and had the opportunity to see them once more (last and only time was in August 1986) then I would die a happy man.

A glorious song!

That Autobiography extract gave me pause. I mean, for all I know we might all have bad memories of school days but Morrissey's description is verging on comedy because it's so over-the-top - it's as if he were describing a concentration camp, or dungeons during the Inquisition.

Over the top? Yes, I tend to agree, though it is an interesting read, no?
