Morrissey Central "TED KIM" (March 17, 2025)

The autotune made it and absolute "no" for me.

No musical instruments were harmed (or touched) in the making of this video.

I feel like if you can’t make a compelling recording with human beings + instruments + one mic in a room, you shouldn’t be allowed to access studio wizardry.

autotune sounds as if its making someone who cant sing suddenyl be a great singer, its a voice modulator which corrects pitch, without technology we may as well go back to violins and cellos.respected musicians like radiohead have embraced autotune and nobody seems to mind.
notable exceptions are cher and believe which was way over the top making her sound like a robot.

Yes. When people use auto tune in this way, they’re not really using it to correct their pitch, the device is being ‘abused’ i.e., used creatively, as an effect. It’s understandable that it may sound ‘bad’ or ‘wrong’ to those that didn’t grow up with it, that their ear isn’t use to it. I’m sure back in the day, that the echo used on Elvis recordings, or the Flange effect used on Beatles recordings sounded just as strange to ears that weren’t familiar with those sounds. Though of course it can be debated that reverb, echo/delay are acoustic effects that most would be familiar with in everyday life. And that autotune used in the extreme way that it is, sounds unnatural, alien or ‘unmusical’ to some people’s ear. But in the end, like it or not, it’s simply a modern effect ‘ear candy’ to grab the attention of the listener, and/or used to conform to what’s expected in a modern pop recording, usually depending on the genre, but not always.

Edit: though I should add, I don’t know if the software being used is actually autotune, but understandably, the sound effect could be described as such.

Are you sure it's the same Ted Kim, gordyboy9? I think there are two amateur musicians by the same name. Kim is a common Korean surname. There's a Ted Kim on bandcamp who seems more like a former "alt-punk" suspect than this YouTuber who's into autotune and anime. But if they're one and the same, then they have a song called "Elon Musk is evil." It's very 2010 hushed acoustic oh-so-sensitive indie. I wonder if Morrissey's band members, who seem to unanimously hate Trump, will ask him to cover it. I can see Carmen Vandenberg strumming a mandolin and Camila Grey cooing the backing vocals. Light Housework would appreciate the Joker reference.

Some say that Elon Musk now owns the White House
Well I guess the world truly is f*cked
Cause some men just wanna see world burn
Yeah he could be the joker himself
Or is it just
Or is it just
Or is it just
Me?

Autotune to correct vocals is fine. When used that way you wouldn't even know it's there.

This song is using it as an effect that completely ruins the vocals.

That's an absolute deal breaker for me.

These posts on Moz Central are a yawn fest. But I'm happy anyway as I'm awaiting a big GENE announcement on Thursday. March 20th is the 35 year anniversary of Olympian so I'm sure they'll be reforming for a tour. Would be too much to hope for a new GENE album. I always thought Martin Rossiter and Morrissey should have collaborated on a duet. 'Drawn to the Deep End' would have been a perfect song choice for a wallowing Roz & Moz croon together.

if he does it in his normal voice then its just a version of karaoke,i like to think theres a bit of experimentation when doing a cover.
