I saw him with Lords of the New Church, strange night.
RIP

I'm surprised you're surprised. They were right there at the birth of the bastard child called punk. While Malcolm McLaren played his usual antics. All now part of music history.

What I'm getting at is until Morrissey covered That's Entertainment, had he ever mentioned he was a big Jam fan? Although he was at the infamous Manchester Free Trade Hall Pistols gig, had he ever mention he was ever much of a Sex Pistols fan or the Damned? He'd mentioned the Fall and the Ramones, but otherwise he was always banging on about Cilla Black, the Shangri-las and Timi Yuro.
If the Smiths had chosen to cover New Rose instead of Cilla Black, we could have had a 5th, 6th or even 10th album from them, and history could have been very different...

In The South Bank Show documentary Moz makes it clear that he was steeped in punk music, and the 'punk ideals' as he calls them. Johnny makes it clear that he wasn't, and calls most punk music 'crap'.

I think Johnny was into funky groups like Chic when punk came around. He had also said that he far preferred Pentangle to Led Zeppelin, so Johnny was very musically sophisticated and aware when he was young.

Johnny also mentions being influenced by folk music, from both sides of the Atlantic. It is definitely there in the sound of The Smiths, and given Moz's recent praise of Loudon Wainwright’s first album, and some of his choices on California Son, e.g. Bob Dylan, the lyrical sensibilities of folk seem to have been an influence for Morrissey too.

Quilloughby says very little about these people until they kick the bucket.
BORING !!!!!!!! 😩

Yes, as i said he bangs on about Cilla Black, I've followed his every word since 1983, and you've agreed, not a dickie bird about the Jam or the Damned. I remember Johnny claimed he was "too young" for punk, which I always thought was a strange comment. I saw the Clash in Manchester in 1981, and I'm 3 years younger than JM! Morrissey may well have been there too, cos his mate Billy Duffy was supporting in Theatre Of Hate. Johnny missed out on a brilliant gig that night.

That’s cool and all but were the Clash really still punk in 1981? That’s already in post-punk territory after Ian Curtis died.

They're probably around 17 :D There was a time when they were around 5th. They are fun, I like the whole 'horror punk' thing, which for The Damned is safe and kitsch.

"I've been BITTEN over YOUUUUUUUU...I've gone RABID over YOU!"
Fond memories of that song. The band I was in did it live a few times. The high notes hurt.

i bet johnny probably passed on punk as he was interested in being a guitar player and folk and funk are fun to play

Yeah, that's a fun song! His voice is very, VERY cool on that one. Plus, the dual guitar thing during the verses, especially the one with the fuzz, is real slick sounding.

Thanks for sharing that, honestly. I too was more of a performer musically in the past, but you never know what's coming up ahead.
