Indeed he was once able to do that. I don’t see many artists today doing that as we both once did, and that’s what I wondering earlier. . . Which artists have been filling large venues more recently, say, in the past 5 years? And which of those artists do you truly want to see and have praise for their work?

(Face it, part of this is about our society and aging. I won’t go into that here. Man, I’m just going to keep on enjoying Morrissey and whoever else I want to.)

New Order although I would prefer to see them in smaller venues.

Yeah that's it! Or it could be, He. Doesn't. Make. Anyone. Any. Money. In fact, he is a money loser.

He had a chance to be big, '88-'94 and briefly, 2004. That window has closed and the worst part is, he never appreciated how young, talented, and handsome he once was.
Yes, ‘never appreciated’ especially when he never chose to put his face on all his album covers.
He was on the proverbial cusp and his insecurities never allowed him to get over the threshold. He is what he is now, a niche' nostalgia act who is trying to stay relevant in a rapidly changing world.
But even if true, it does not in anyway dismiss his importance to people that continue to love the man. And that’s all that really matters. Sorry you don’t feel that way anymore. Anyway, your opinion could easily be applied to any artist that can still get up on stage. Take your heroes The Stones for example, they haven’t written a good song since 1978’s Miss You. Lol.

for you? finally? You’re gonna leave solo? Please, don’t make promises you can’t keep.

As far as relevant, working bands, I would say The Killers.

Objectively, they are better than Morrissey and far more successful. Brandon Flowers is a great performer, much younger, in great shape, and has a winning smile!

sick puke GIF

If i ever wake up with amnesia and come here one day to make any posts about Brandon Flowers being in great shape or having a winning smile, that will be the point at which i grant anybody reading this permission to push me off the nearest bridge!

I really don't like The Killers, but it's true that they are more popular. That's not to say that Morrissey isn't popular. I disagree about Brandon Flowers tho. He used to be really handsome a few years ago, but he looks so weird now 😭

So is age/youth perception the big bugaboo obstacle to the relevance of Morrissey? I said I wasn’t going to mention it really but we’ve arrived here.

We are all aware of aging women becoming invisible, especially to hetero men. Is this a problem as much for aging men? So much to discuss here about age, perception of aging, the music industry and the realities that youthful sexuality is the moneymaker, etc. and that unless you’re deemed sexually attractive by the tastemakers and investors, you’re irrelevant, artistry be damned in the name of the almighty erected tower and mountains of cold hard cash. 😆 but 😔 and 😭 too.

(Signed,
Me at 51 but still very alive and creative)

And I’m not being antagonistic whatsoever when I inquire, but I’m curious why would you prefer seeing New Order in a smaller venue?

I first saw them as Joy Division supporting Buzzcocks years ago and then sort of grew up with them as they became New Order. Back in the day they started in small venues and moved onto larger places but always had a minimal lighting set which basically consisted of blue green and white lights. Bernard really couldn’t sing but the there was a certain charm to that which led to the start of a cult following. Fast forward to today where they play arenas world wide (even though they haven’t released an album in nearly 10 years) and it’s very different , they have a very lavish multimedia stage set, Bernard (with auto tune) sounds good and they have re sequenced a lot of the older stuff which on the face of it is all good, however I went to see Peter Hook in York recently where he played a mix of JD and NO stuff to 250o people rather than 22000 people. I enjoyed the gig far more than NO at O2 as there was a raw energy there that’s missing from NO nowadays and it made me realise that I enjoy the more intermate gigs rather than arena stuff . Hope that makes sense.

The picture of the man kissing M’s hand was at the Alabama Theatre. I remember that dude wouldn’t let go! Near the end of the show.

Totally makes sense, it’s that energy that seems to get lost in the crowds of people who just want to be there to get drunk and socialize and don’t care about the music.

Another one showed up at the encore ending of the Durham, NC concert. There’s mixed feelings about this kind of display that disregards the others in the audience, becomes a little bit insensitive and selfish. The fan’s love was endearing, but he refused to let go and demanded Morrissey’s attention right at the end. Morrissey ended the concert basically in a one-on-one with this guy, abandoning the rest of the audience suddenly. Again, on one hand, endearing and hoping Morrissey feels the love, but c’mon fans, show some respect for your fellow concert-goers. Get on the stage, get your hug gently and then cease making it about you. Please.

Funny enough, my husband and I were sitting in the balcony watching the lovely fans lined up along the stage before the event started. We predicted correctly which individual (a gal in jeans) would be the first to bolt on stage in Durham. You can just tell. 🤭

The Cure and Depeche Mode played to much larger audiences in that timeframe. I saw both and enjoyed it. Morrissey isn't playing smaller venues because he's trying to have a more intimate experience with his audience (though that's what is happening by virtue of the smaller venues). It's because it's what he can do now. This isn't an attack on Morrissey. I'm happy that he's regrouped, is playing shows, and his fans are seeing him.
