So he was 19 or 20 when these photos were taken. He looks like he was starting to slowly escape from a shyness that is criminally vulgar. Johnny knocking on the door was only a few years away. Perhaps he had already started to write some embryonic lyrics? But you can still see the awkwardness. Thank God he met some other misfits to not feel on his own. Is there anything more precious that those years immediately before we are forced to become an adult?
Mad to think this is actually after the Patti Smith gig (1978) where he met Johnny for the first time. They were so, so young.

I love these photos. He looks like he’s having so much fun. Peeking into Morrissey’s past, before fame, is one of my favorite things. It just shows what an interesting shy boy he was - even in magenta lipstick. I wish I’d known him back in those days. ❤️

It's always fun when old pics of Morrissey pop up. I'm not getting a new romantic vibe from them tho

Haha how angry the guy who invited Moz to that famous party and says he has other photos... and that he is not going to publish them in the "Solo" because there are people here who do not like it... But what stupidity, the photos will be posted and will arrive on this site as soon as they come out. He wants to benefit or harm Moz.???. I'm amused by the photos, there's nothing wrong, just that Moz is a bit ridiculous haha

hahahaha hahaha hahaha no. 😑
It is, of course, speculation only - but many of those lyrics from The Smiths suggest that Moz had early sexual experiences with both women and men. You think because he was a bit 'different' and wore lipstick that was not possible? And this was the 70s, after all. Pop stars wearing lipstick was all the rage. You really don't know much about human beings if you think that sexuality is black and white and ready to be easily labelled.

I think it's the lipstick sharing that perhaps people find a bit unsettling. Anyone with a heart though can see in those pics they were having a riot.

My Youtube algorithm keeps serving up Robert Smith, bit disconcerting as he's all grown up now but still holding onto Siouxsie's makeup. Also once saw my hero James Coburn on an old tv series (Darkroom or something) in drag, something I still can't unsee to this day.

Wonder what other things he got up to. Wish there was some stuff from the Nosebleeds era.

"Girls who want boys
Who like boys to be girls
Who do boys like they're girls
Who do girls like they're boys
Always should be someone you really love"

It's brave just to be yourself, and not conform to what peer-pressure and society demands you be.
It's just a shame that 20-year-old Steven hadn't been "braver" and opted to just be himself instead of unthinkingly trying - like so many of his peers at the time - to ape his/their favourite pop-stars, as though doing so could somehow be taken as a sign of "individuality".

In these pictures we can see clearly that, by the standards of 1979, he'd become the very embodiment of adolescent cliché: boring, banal and brainless in equal measure.

In short, 1970s Steven was evidently just as much of a twat as 2020s Steven.

1979 was a fantastic time for music.

The Cure and Joy Division released their debut albums.
Michael Jackson released Off the Wall
Human League made excellent stuff on their debut album.
Ultravox were between Systems of Romance and Vienna.
Bruce Springsteen was between Darkness and The River.
The Jam released my favorite Jam album Setting Sons.
Magazine released Secondhand Daylight.
Wire released 154.
Gang of Four gave us the magnificent Entertainment.
The Slits debuted with Cut.
The Clash released London Calling.
Siouxsie and the Banshees released Join Hands.
PiL made Metal Box.
Bowie made Lodger.

I can go on and on. Is 1979 the best year in pop history? Or is it 1977? Or some other year entirely?

So many great albums! Really, just amazing.

London Calling is absolutely terrific, and not just because they say it is. That album has been a mainstay (for 25 years) in my long-trip driving CD collection. Meanwhile, The Cure's Three Imaginary Boys and all it's B-sides (& unreleased work from that time too) essentially started a new musical genre.

One could enjoy only one-third of London Calling and they'd still feel satisfied with the album. For the most part, any band featuring two good vocalists usually has a huge advantage anyway, and the range of genres that album includes...such a rich collection. I'm down for rapping about The Cure and Clash whenever.

I agree with everything you just said. It’s an astonishing album. It shouldn’t be able to hold together since it’s so long and sprawling, but it does. It’s not my favorite Clash album, but my lord is it good. Favorites: Guns of Brixton, Spanish Bombs and…maybe Rudie.
