Have you noticed that ever since Morrissey went racist, his lyrics, album artwork, and looks have all suffered? Hate will do that to people.
Well, he's been racist for quite a while. Bengali in Platforms is an old song now. But his talent, lyrics, artwork etc compensated for this aspect of his nature.

Then when his creative talent gave way to laziness, which was also quite a while ago now, his racism, political stupidity and persecution complex became more obvious.

I'd put a lot of this rot down to alcohol and the sycophantic people around him. They may be musically capable but not big thinkers, bless em.

Other artists get away with being controversial. Look at rap music. People are so boring.
False equivalence.

"Punch up" -- to attack or criticize someone who is in a better or more powerful position than you (rap singers).

"Punch down" -- to attack or criticise someone who is in a worse or less powerful position than you (Morrissey).

I've said it before, but when you are young, attractive, witty, charming, talented and charismatic, you can get away with a lot of things. When those things start to fade, the inner ugliness is more apparent. Society will forgive just about anyone who is young and beautiful, it's different when people get older.

Bingo! Also songs about loneliness and longing just comes off as odd when sung by an older, gray haired guy. Maybe that's why his lyrics have shifted so dramatically to bitter, grievance driven pablum.

Rappers get accused of punching down, like the new eminem album. Though I give him the benefit of the doubt.

As we say in Manchester, when you’re a kitten you can shit on the carpet and when you’re a cat, you can’t.

Eminem was interesting for about 10 minutes, twenty years ago, so I'm not sure what he's up to / saying these days.

Anyway, when you said, "Other artists get away with being controversial. Look at rap music", I was pretty sure you were saying that, unlike Morrissey, they get away with controversial lyrics.

Interesting to note that according to the recent interview Record Collector, Vini Reilly was disconcerted that the song he played on turned into Bengali in Platforms. I wonder if Morrissey would have tried singing that in the Smiths.

Nah, that's number two biggest mistake. Number one was wearing that f***ing badge!

Notre Dame at number three? ;-w
Did For Britain have any representation at last week's election?
What happened to the woman who was the leader?
Did they all jump ship to Reform?

Edit
Answering my own question here.
Anne Marie Waters dissolved the party in 2022 and has since rejoined UKIP

Dear ms Burke.

Yes. Sometimes we pay attention to wankers knowing from day 1 they're wankers. Sometimes we're even aware that idols are, by definition, wankers, but that doesn't stop us. Sometimes idols themselves know they're wankers but they don't stop being wankers. Or idols.

So yes: balls ro all that!
Break free break from the cha-ain!

Please explain how a man rapping about hoes and bitches or batty boys is 'punching up'?

A way of rationalizing the fact that it's just about the criticism is deemed acceptable or not by the "powers that be".
