I remember watching that live in a friend's house as we got ready to go out. His mother kept talking to me so I missed half of it. Was disgusted I wasn't in my own house recording it on VHS.

I would love to see all his bbc appearances together on a blu ray or something Acton. They did it with Siouxsie a few years ago. Fingers crossed one day....

For context, Oscar Wilde, then 39 at the time, had sex with an inexperienced 16 year old boy. So yes, it is absolutely right that he would be attacked.

Personally, while it may be legal in 2024, I don't think that 39 year old adults having sex with inexperienced 16 year old children is OK. But hey, you do you.

I know this is a topic you love to sound sanctimonious and 'holier than thou' about. It's ironic that you have a problem with a 16-year old having consensual sex, but you don't have a problem with a 16-year old consenting to life changing 'gender affirming' treatment. Fry's husband is 30 years younger than he is - do you 'approve' of that age difference?
The law around the age of consent at the time of Wilde's trial is a very grey area - in that sex between a male and another male of any age was a criminal offence at that time. For hundreds of years in England the age at which a girl could marry was 12. In 2024 many will find that shocking - but it's quite understandable from an evolutionary biology point of view. If you are one harvest away from famine and starvation, ensuring a high fertility and birth rate makes total sense. Both female and male prostitution were rife in Victorian England. There was no welfare state and most people barely made enough money to survive. Because of the prevalence of child prostitution in particular, the The Offences Against the Person Act in 1875 made it a criminal offence to have sex with a girl under 13 in Great Britain and Ireland, and The Criminal Law Amendment Act in 1885 made it a criminal offence to have sex with a girl under 16. This act was brought about specifically to reduce child prostitution. The act only related to heterosexual sex, of course. Wilde's trial was 10 years later in 1895, but consensual sex between males of any age was a crime. In 1929 the Ages of Marriages Act raised the legal age a girl or a boy could marry to 16. Before then a boy could get married at 14.
