An interesting comparison for US chart purposes might be between Morrissey and Sting - both British singers in their 60s, both in short-lived but massively influential bands from the 1980s (mostly) and both now long-established solo artists. (But only one of whom wrote the most played song in the history of American radio!) Both released albums on May 24th, both of which were covers (in Sting's case, of his own back catalogue).

Sting's last 7 solo album peak positions on the Billboard 200, starting with Sacred Love in 2003: 3, 25, 6, 6, 13, 9, 146.

And the same for Morrissey's last 7 albums on the Billboard 200, starting with Maladjusted in 1997: 61, 11, 27, 11, 14, 20, 95.

Of course. Neither WPINOYB nor LIHS rank among my favorites. Yet live he’s remarkably good and is still a huge draw in many countries.
I wouldn’t worry too much about sales. His label and management have faith in him, his albums still chart and besides, sales isn’t what it once was.

I see the problems, of course. The situation is far from ideal. But at the same time it’s not the nightmare that some of his most ardent detractors wants us to believe. Nuance and balance seems to be hard to come by when discussing Moz.

The very specific problem is that he has hemorrhaged a massive chunk of his UK fan-base in the last 12 months (due to his idiotic support of the toxic For Bigots party). Probably by over 50%. And despite having an international presence, his UK fan-base was by far the biggest of any country. His commercial clout and ability to get a record deal was already extremely marginal, hence the long periods of being unsigned. The last 12 months has seen a commercially challenging situation become virtually untenable. He is very lucky that a new album has already been written and recorded (presumably paid for by the record company). If he was looking for a new deal now, he wouldn't stand a cat in hell's chance.

Nonsense ^.

California Son, Morrissey's album of cover versions, is number 4 in the UK albums chart.

Number 2 on Amazon's Alternative Indie chart https://www.amazon.co.uk/Best-Sellers-Music-Alternative-Indie/zgbs/music/231193?tag=msamzn-21

Number 7 on Billboards Top Album Sales chart https://www.billboard.com/charts/top-album-sales

Number 3 on Billboard's Vinyl Albums chart https://www.billboard.com/charts/vinyl-albums

It’s about number 30 now in the uk charts lol. And #95 on the proper billboard 200. It sold 7000 copies in the U.K. lol and 5,000 in the US, it’s his lowest selling album of Allllllllll time.

being on indie charts with BMG is an insult to all independent labels worldwide

:handpointup:Correct this, please.

So, it was actually his lowest charting studio album ever in the USA. Admittedly it was a covers album with little promotion.

The main chart is the Billboard 200 though, so it's a bit misleading to say it's the "most successful U.S. chart position to date".

I you follow the Billboard link I posted, it says CS is "the most succesful Morrissey's US chart position to date" at #7. It's a fact. If you don't agree with Billboard, ask them to correct the way they make the charts in the same way I'm asking you to correct the wrong information posted here.

"Morrissey's California Son album has charted at number 7 in the USA Official Billboard Chart."

The statement is not completely accurate as there is no "USA Official Billboard Chart" unless it's referring to the Billboard 200 which it isn't. See FatGayVegan's earlier post with more details.

He's pointing to the one that makes him look better because he's devious, truculent and unreliable. Someone worked that out a while ago!
