Strange/unexpected Moz references?

To revisit that reddit issue, do you know if the dispute concerns only one moderator on one of the Morrissey, Smiths subreddits, or is the dispute about whether the organisation as a whole should add warning labels asserting disapproval of Morrissey for any threads where he gets a mention? Because if you do a search, it seems the latter has happened, I don't know when. As if reddit at levels higher than moderators have imposed the policy. In recent days, it seems to have gotten so bad that some redditers have wondered if complainers formerly endemic on Morrissey-solo have migrated onto reddit! Expecting someone subject to this kind of victimisation to be able to deal with it, and not to be materially affected, is unrealistic. Is the dispute within reddit or have external parties engaged with it? Perhaps Morrissey and Wine, The Morrissey Mercury, #FillUpThePage might investigate?
I have not seen any specific warning labels, can you give any examples?

The pinned post you mentioned was made by just one moderator (and is no longer pinned). He is worried that the professional Reddit mods might remove that subreddit, but as far as I am aware he hasn't actually been told the sub is in danger by anybody. He is just worried that it might happen.

Thanks, Dr. Statham. When I do a search for just 2 words, 'reddit morrissey', over half the results come with headings like, why does everyone hate Morrissey, what's he done that's so bad. The pot-shots pile on.

Thanks for the update about the unpinning of that particular post. I wonder what's causing the worry? And what purpose the warning is thought to serve? It's strange for no one to be as concerned that labeling a thread in that way creates a biased frame for browsers, and contributors adding to it. :tiphat:

This is very good, and very interesting, not only in the sense of its obscurity, but also that a song of similar title is released days after a well-known band releases one. Morrissey's name doesn't jump out, from what I've heard. Are you sure it's about him? Some lines I could discern and like:

"if you are evil, then I am evil as well. There are a lot of people I would rather see in hell" !!

And the cover art is so fitting. And the film clip, which I can't place. Do you know any more about Hell One? Hell Yeah!

Not really strange/unexpected but Bow Wow Wow recorded ‘I started something I couldn’t finish’ in 2006.

Looking at a recent setlist they are still playing it in thier live shows…

Coming to Cardiff next year. Might go…

Unfortunately it seems Reddit users will pile on to Morrissey if he is mentioned on a non-Morrissey subreddit. I suppose it is a reflection of the way he is publicly perceived now, in a large part due to the press campaign against him. Also perhaps a reflection of how Reddit generally is - very young, generally very liberal, slightly over-the-top ideas of justice (so a lot of hate campaigns against anyone who disagrees with them), and generally prone to hiveminds (maybe the upvote system doesn't help there).

I think the moderator is worried because Reddit has closed down subreddits in the past for racist content - I am not aware of the specifics though, and it doesn't seem to be all that common.

Thanks again for the enlightening reply. The thread I saw the comments about Morrissey-solo on was this one -

That the moderator unpinned the excessive warning is a positive. It shows pressures and decisions can change, meaning the rest can change too, perhaps with time, at least. The successful recent tour is another plus. As Jason Leopold, Bloomberg FOI reporter said, Morrissey tends to be a lightning rod and bell-weather exposing cultural currents. Facebook is still targeting Oxford-trained medical researchers long after Zuckerberg declared he regretted agreeing to censoring and after saying Meta would stop - https://trusttheevidence.substack.com/p/censorship-is-alive-and-well-zuckenbergs

Also there is a St Steven -
Grateful Dead sang a similar song.

Same name, and more clearly about the Christian martyr :thumb:

Thanks, Thewlis. The song by Deep Blue Something is of course, Saint Morrissey; similar but not the same. Still a coincidence, imo.

The Saint Steven track is also on Bandcamp - https://hellonline.bandcamp.com/track/saint-steven

The band, Hell Online, have one album up there - https://hellonline.bandcamp.com/album/satan-is-cringe:
Musicians/ producers are:
Patrick Welsh - Synthesizers, Bass, Vocals
Jade Carrico - Synthesizers

The album was mixed at Blue Bell Knoll and mastered by Scott Craggs at Old Colony Mastering, as maybe was this song.

Cover art is from near the end of the 1934 film, Of Human Bondage, based on a Somerset Maugham novel. The spoken word clip, heard from about 2 minutes 45 seconds into the song, is also taken from the film, at about 48 minutes in. Very nicely done. What do others think? All we need now are the full lyrics :guitar:

12. Borough boy
Did you go and see Morrissey at the Borough Hall in late 1999?

FWD.

A writer takes Marr more to task for something than Morrissey.
American Songwriter reports on 3 rock stars who blocked album releases.

Marr should be congratulated for blocking that terrible artwork for Smiths Rule OK. And his reasoning was there are already a variety of greatest hit packages released that are still readily available. As usual the writer has done no research.

The artwork's fine. It looks great in profiles solo members lifted it for.

Why is Morrissey so popular in Mexico?
