The Smiths song Johnny Marr thought nobody could match

(Oddly, the article's title changed just after publishing - it was "The Smiths song that sounds out on its own").

Who was the ‘Handsome Devil’ The Smiths were singing about?

On the latest episode of Have I Got News For You they were discussing Keir Starmer’s description of civil servants sitting in “the tepid bath of managed decline.” The host, Stephen Mangan, quipped, “I’ve got that Morrissey album”.

What an awesome list!!

By coincidence, yesterday I looked up the 1985 Festive Fifty because I wondered where "Sub-culture" by New Order was on the list - I've been reading the Factory book by Mick Middles, and got to the bit mentioning the Low-Life LP. Barney was quoted from 1985 saying "For example, I really love The Smiths. I think what they are doing is wonderful...". I have cassette recordings in the attic if anyone wants a copy made. They were my Spotify playlist for 1986, 1987 and 1988:LOL:.

Eddie Van Halen: The “beautiful” guitarist Johnny Marr called his opposite.

“On the Smiths’ last American tour,” Marr told Noisey back in 2013, “We had a day off in Washington, and because we were on the same label, somebody arranged for us to go see Eddie Van Halen, and so I dragged the rest of the band along … that’s everybody in the band,” he added with a sly smile, knowing that the image of Morrissey taking in a David Lee Roth performance is every bit as brain-melting as the Marr vs Eddie proposition. “I’ve never seen anything like it. It was ticker tape coming down from the heavens even before the band came on. It was amazing.”
