English version:

The Audio of DER SPIEGEL's Interview with Morrissey
British pop singer Morrissey has accused DER SPIEGEL of falsely quoting him in a recently published interview. The magazine stands behind its reporting and has made the decision to post the audio online in response.

On Friday, Nov. 10, DER SPIEGEL culture reporter Juliane Liebert told her editors that she had been offered an interview with British popstar Morrissey and that a decision needed to be made quickly on whether to accept. We agreed: The former lead singer of The Smiths doesn't shy away from speaking his mind - and he also doesn't grant interviews very often.

The following Monday, Liebert flew to Los Angeles, where she was to interview Morrissey on Tuesday. The interview appointment got delayed several times before finally taking place on Wednesday and lasting 40 minutes. Edited versions of interviews published in DER SPIEGEL are usually authorized by the interview subject before publication, consistent with established procedure in German journalism. But in this instance, Morrissey's team elected to forego authorization.

After its publication on Nov. 18 in DER SPIEGEL, the interview (available behind the SPIEGEL Plus paywall in German) generated headlines not only in the German-language media. English publications like the Independent also wrote about Morrissey's statements regarding Trump, Brexit, the #MeToo debate and questions of national identity.

The musician then sought to distance himself from the published interview. "Unless you see the words form in my mouth and then you see or hear the words come out of my mouth... please, if you don't see that, I didn't say them," he told fans at a concert. He said he would never grant an interview to a print journalist again.

On Monday, Morrissey followed up with a post on his official Facebook page casting doubt on whether his statements had been reflected accurately by DER SPIEGEL. He also alleged that the fact that the magazine had not yet posted the raw audio of the interview was tantamount to an indirect admission of guilt.

To counter that claim, the editors of DER SPIEGEL have decided to post the audio of the interview online.

WtF? the so called interviewer <probably a very strong feminist woman> giggling like a little stupid girl throughout the interview... then afterwards in the editing process she got all feminist and tough. LOL
Frankly I think Moz should sue the F out of them.
Maybe she will claim humasexual harassment in five years or so. LOL

What impressed me the most is that M put up with the interviewers interviewing 'skills', talk about patience and understanding! I applaud you M, I would have walked out after the second question.

It's really too bad the media turned against him again, because in spite of the interviewer, he does ( I deduce from his talkativeness here) enjoy doing face to face interviews.

Mystery cut where she asks '...also thinking about this whole thing with actresses ?' then it cuts out and comes back in with M talking. Very strange. :paranoid:
He was certainly kind to her. Most Hollywood stars, say, would not have put up with her unprofessionalism during that interview. They would've had a strop and walked out... Unless perhaps... no, I won't go there.

Murder Donald Trump? If you took that seriously you are an actual imbecile. Ever heard of the expression tongue firmly in cheek? Moz has been employing this technique in interviews since 1983!

Before some fool anon or hatebot comments, I just wanna make clear that I wasn't bashing the interviewer in my post. But how she ever got the gig is mind-boggling, to say the least.

Maybe that is related to the "private story" thing she talks about in her Twitter account.

Well count me as somebody who is bashing the interviewer. She is terrible at her job but struck lucky.

no, I agree with you. I'm just hoping that this is her first interviewing assignment and that hopefully she'll improve. I'm just really surprised they sent her out to do it. I'm thinking there must have been an experienced journalist who last minute must have called in sick.

Yeah same goes for when he says he's vegan or that meat is murder all with tongue firmly in cheek. You're a first class delusional twit!

Nobody saw the words forming in your mouth and then physically coming out of your mouth, so you are safe.

Or maybe tomorrow's headline on the Spiegel will be: "Ketamine Sun was bashing a hmmm retarded hmmm journalist and stating that Berlin is the <<hmm hmm like hmmm>> capital of hmm Europe hmmm".

Quite. Seems the private story is that she doctored the tape. Cut it right off in parts, then said: Here you are bitches, the full version - enjoy. Maybe Moz said a few things not fitting with her bastard narrative.

I think she was slightly more sneaky than that, luring him into a false sense of security with her giggly girl 'I know nothing' act. There was no malice in anything he said, quite the opposite, which I agree, is even more evident in the recorded version, where you can actually hear him speaking with genuine concern for the way things are in Germany. But it's the big salacious headlines that most people take notice of, and that's what has left Morrissey feeling indignant - and feeling the need to say Hey, I never quite said that. I honestly feel Moz is the only celebrity out there who genuinely cares about what is happening in the world outside of his own head. Other celebrities might say they care, but they wouldn't let it depress them.

Maybe you are right about her being sneaky, but I'm not so sure about that. Interviewers know the recordings belong to their employers and they can be made public in any time, even in a court of justice. If she were sneaky she would have acted more professionally, with less giggles and personal stories in the middle of the interview.

Maybe. But maybe not. You simply just don't say this is the full recording when it clearly isn't.

The question about Trump was nonsensical and the answer too.
If you ask that question to Kim Jong-un, then the answer has a meaning.
If you ask that question to Putin, then the answer has another meaning.
If you ask that question to Justin Bieber, then the answer has another meaning.

Sure. That's why I doubt about her being a serious professional. She should have done all the giggling and "private story" thing before or after the interview. A true professional does not leave loose ends.
What about her "I'm very German, unfortunately" commentary?

Nope, if you check out her website she’s interviewed a number of artists.
I agreee that she could have been a little more professional and should have done more research, like when she asked if he’s ever been to Tel-Aviv. But, I did like her style overall and a lot (not all) of the questions.

As long as it says audio file instead of paedophile you are good to go Moz!

she did sound young and very green. Is this what the new breed of journalists sound like? is this some new advanced interviewing technique that my ear is not familiar with ? Seems to be acceptable:confused: if she has done more than one interview.

MAY THE HEAVENS HELP MUSIC JOURNALISM !:pray::pray::pray:

I find it intriguing that the journalist was told to not ask about politics. But by whom? Since Morrissey is so willing to answer, the request hasn't obviously come from him. Does some poor soul do managerial duties for him? Or is the request made by the record company -- I'm sure BMG has made these interviews happen and persuaded Morrissey to talk to Der Spiegel and The Times. They have clearly underestimated his talent for self-sabotage.

ALL the famous and almost-famous musicians have a manager and their job is to make that kind of requests. Sometimes the artist himself may not even know what was requested.

The interest or "job" of his manager is to protect the interests of the artists (which in most cases is selling albums). Politics, no matter what you say, are always divisive. Even if Morrissey has given less "controversial" answers, the interview would still be quite useless.

*i.e, I do remember to have participated in the making of the video of a song for a local artist who somehow wanted to look "pretty", but he had a very odd body: he was very thin, but his butt and hips were HUGE. He looked like a rhombus... and the video was mostly this guy dancing. So his manager requested us NOT to ever film him using a frontal angle, so we had to shoot him always using a 45º or 90º angle and a few times from above... The singer never knew we were protecting his image (or his big butt), but the request of the manager made sense.

He looked a bit like this:

Which brings to my mind that Morrissey was quite unprotected during this interview. There were not many comments about the "Polaroid photo", but it is obvious that it's is a terrible photo.
