hi-fi+: "Spent the day in bed is slightly leftfield” - new Dana Gillespie interview (March 20, 2025)

In one of the audio/hifi magazines I’m reading I spotted this new interview with Dana Gillespie.

Short excerpt:

The first single from the album was a Morrissey song – ‘Spent The Day In Bed.’ He said your version is better than his…
Yes – he’s a friend of Tris’s. I’ve never met him – somebody wrote on my Facebook that he’s got weird eyes…

So did Bowie…
Exactly. The Morrissey song was suggested by Tris, and, as I don’t mind spending the odd day in bed… I used to do it more when I was younger, but I’m now so busy I never get to do it.

I really agree with the sentiments of the chorus, which is, ‘Stop watching the news, because the news contrives to frighten you…

That’s what attracted me to the song, and because it’s slightly leftfield. Let’s face it, Morrissey has got almost two million followers on whatever it is people follow him on, and that song just seemed to sum things up – especially these days, when the news is totally depressing. I don’t know when you go to print, but somebody might’ve pressed the nuclear button by then!

Interesting to read it wasn’t Dana’s choice but Tris’s. But I don’t know what the “weird eyes” comment is about? Anyway here’s the link:

The first time he used the "the cover is better than the original" line (that has since become stock, no?) to my recollection was in 2002 when T.a.t.u. covered How Soon is Now. I thought it was hilarious then, and still do. It makes for a good soundbite.

And a whopping 17,000 plays on Spotify for Dana's version of Spent the Day...
I think I've actually had the knowledge of that T.a.t.u cover removed from my head

I can only assume I went to the trouble of creating a technology to edit human memory - It seems worth the effort for this particular reason

They made a movie about your creation called Eternal Sunshine of the Coverless Mind.

Somethings a bit off, the interview was posted on the 20th March 25, the gig he apparently attended was 10th May 24? Dirk said he attended as well but never saw Morrissey.

Dirk - Shit , the bed I was there with wife and daughter and had no clue M was there
We even went to a pub and chatted with some of the people who went , nobody mentioned M was there .
dirk and his memory are very rarely in the same room together.

Mentally he’s still 12 listening to his 45s in his room, daydreaming on his bed. There they are best friends.
Just like FiDo and MJ
