10 years of World Peace is None of Your Business

Rubbish songs
- Kiss me
- World peace
- Kick the bride
- Scandinavia
- Forgive someone
Quite good songs
- Neal Cassady
- Not a man
- Lovejoy
- Oboe
- Earth is
Really good songs
- Istanbul
- One of our own
- Drag a river
- Art hounds
Flipping great songs
- Julie in the weeds
- Smiler with knife
- Staircase (for the music more than the words)

Generally speaking, it pisses all over the generic indie stodge that made up most of Quarry, ROTT and Refusal.
A huge breath of fresh air - just needed better editing (i.e. different selection of songs for the album proper).

Kinda wish that Staircase woulda been the comin' out single.
Woulda been a fun way to come back, after the long wait.

I liked it then and think some of the tracks on the Deluxe Edition still shine (e.g., Julie, One of Our Own, Forgive Someone, etc.). It's not one I go back to and when we did the Morrissey A-Z, some of the tracks like Staircase that I thought were strong didn't seem to age well.

The cover was glaringly inferior to the two that preceded it, which I consider his two best solo career album covers. I was also displeased with the J.C. production (things would only get worse from here) and Earth Is was his most appallingly bad track, musically, since the Kill Uncle period. I understand an artist's desire not to stagnate, but disco mariachi jazz? Despite those faults I still enjoy it. Mountjoy is an exquisite masterpiece, and everything else runs from very good to pretty okay except for the pair of absolute stinkers, Kiss Me A Lot and Earth Is. I would certainly swap several of the bonus tracks in for the lesser album tracks: Art-hounds, Julie, and Drag The River are terrific. Earth Is could've survived as just the spoken word video with Pamela Anderson. That was a great promo.
Agreed 100% on Mountjoy

Who Will Protect Us is indeed pretty rubbish but isn't on the album we're discussing - it's on Low in High School which is a career low point although mostly due to the lyrics rather than the music.
You're correct - that's embarrassing, but I tend to mix these two albums up, as they are both largely shite.

thats weird,i was wandering about my school this morning and who will protect us popped into my head,im one of the few on here who like it.
theirs a few on lihs which are decent, question mark, israel, lonely and cough cough protect.

Holds up brilliantly, Morrissey spoilt us with five-star releases in the 90s. But with Quarry, Ringleader, and Refusal he was treading water. On reflection though, Refusal did hint at something better to come.

My expectations were low, with World Peace, but I was happy to be confounded. Only Kick the Bride disappointed. Further joy came with the deluxe release—which elevated the album to another five-star classic, for me.

Basically, I currently listen to a few songs off it every week. If it was on iMusic it’d be on my gym playlist (minus Art Hounds and Kick the Bride) and I’d be listening to most of it every single week.

I love it.

I loved every Morrissey album up to and including Quarry in 2004. Ringleader was an album that left me cold. World Peace was the album that made me like Morrissey again after Years of Refusal, which I thought was a terrible album. Low in High School I also thought was a dud, and then came California Son and Dog to make me fall in love with Morrissey all over again. And Bonfire promises to be epic. Or certainly the wait for it has been...
For me the weaker songs on the album are Kick, Smiler, and Oboe. Love Mountjoy - 'exquisite masterpiece' as Lucifer Sam put it very well. I also like the title track. No one else but Morrissey uses pop to say things like that.

And Bonfire promises to be epic.
Does it..?
The title track is shite, the other songs he has played live have been mediocre with the possible exception of …Oblivion, but the studio version could be ruined by dodgy production. Speaking of which, the only song we have ‘officially’ heard sounds like it was recorded using faulty equipment.

This is one Mozz album that just doesn’t excite me whatsoever. As it’s been pointed out the live songs that I’ve seen and heard were dreadful.
As I’ve said before BOT will be lucky to make it into the UK top twenty.

Apart from 3-4 songs, Word Peace is an album I could do without.

Thank for for acknowledging the greatness of "When I Open Your Legs". Rarely do I see that song getting much love. It's my favorite by far off Low In High School.

Ridiculous album title, rubbish title track, but then surprisingly great songs especially on the deluxe version.

Yep, the Deluxe Version makes it! A great Morrissey record! For me, it was refreshing to see him follow up YOR with WPINOYB rather than heading back to a Ringleader type direction.

Yeah, I dig the sound of that track a lot. Along with Smiler With Knife (and some others from that period), there was a pretty nice Tex-Mex vibe going on with the band's sound at that time that really should've continued I think.

My God, it's been ten years 😲 . In a way, this is a special album for me. I like it very much .
I would prefer all songs to be released on one CD.
The very idea of deluxe albums is, in my opinion, sick and aimed at making money for the labels
I hate CD packaging, that horrible cardboard that scratches the disc to the extreme. Another disadvantage is the lack of a booklet.
However, apart from these technical details, the music , the songs are still great after 10 years. I do like the cover , maybe because there's a dog on it :dog:
My favorite piece is Oboe Concerto. A fantastic album closer. I believe it's right behind my top ten favorite Morrissey songs.
I really enjoy this album after all those long and wasted years .
Round, round rhythm of life goes round..............
Postscriptum :
From the best to least-favourite song :

1. Oboe Concerto
2. One of Our Own
3. I'm Not a Man
4. Art-hounds
5. Istanbul
6. Scandinavia
7. The Bullfighter Dies
8. Smiler with Knife
9. World Peace Is None of Your Business
10. Forgive Someone
11. Earth Is the Loneliest Planet
12. Staircase at the University
13. Julie in the Weeds
14. Kick the Bride Down the Aisle
15. Mountjoy
16. Neal Cassady Drops Dead
17. Drag the River
18. Kiss Me a Lot

I'll say this for it - it gave me a new found appreciation for Years of Refusal.

Sadly, it marked the beginning of a decline which continues to this day. Third rate songs, third rate artwork, record company fall outs and, naturally, everything being everyone else's fault.

After reading through this thread in it's entirely, all I can say is I am excited to listen to this album!

I've only heard Kiss Me A Lot, Julie in the Weeds, Scandinavia, and Kick the Bride Down the Aisle..
which I enjoy all 4 of them very much, but not equally.
I love the song Scandinavia the most out of the 4, though I've only heard it in this video:

It reminds me of 'Maladjusted', where again - most of the best tracks turned out to be B-Sides/bonus songs, rather than the material on the main album.

The only exception to this is 'Art-Hounds', which is absolutely baffling. It had an absolutely blistering live debut, sounding like one of Morrissey's best new songs in years, then it limps out as a bonus track with the weediest most limp-wristed production of all time. Talk about a missed opportunity. :squiffy:

I think with WPINOYB, the utter shit-ness of the title track and it being the first track on the album put me off right from the start.
Totally agree about Art Hounds; that live performance appeared on YouTube and I loved it, but the album version was a massive letdown.
