I think if I had been drawn to Nabokov on account of some sexual preference, latent or not, it would've been revealed to me decades ago when I read Lolita. I'm sure I would've at least become aware of it before I was 52 yrs old. Who am I supposed to be, Carlislebaz? In the curious country of Sweden, however, I might be considered 53. My birthday is 8 months away, but the Swedes say: "what's a few months, give or take? F*ck, it, you're there already." Anyway, a happy birthday to you. I tried to look up Matt Goodwin, but Wikipedia only lists a Canadian Football League linebacker and an Australian rugby league footballer, neither with December birthdays. At first, though, I thought you were glad to share your birthday with the lead singer of that dork-fest band Muse, but it turns out his name is Matt Bellamy.

Shouldn't it compromise Nicky Wire's spiritual poetic perfection if his politics are opposed to Morrissey's? In broad terms, that is. I'm considering Morrissey "anti-woke" and Nicky Wire (as far as I can make out from the Manics) to be a sort of typical "Che Guevara poster" leftist. I think someone once called them an edgier version of U2, and I like the Manic Street Preachers just fine, but that's not far from the mark.
You're so self absorbed. I tell you it's MY birthday and you feel the need to mention when YOUR birthday is, which isn't even for another 8 months! I bet you're hoping I'll work out when it is and remember to wish you a happy birthday when it comes around! I'm sorry, audrey, but I've got bigger fish to fry!

Well, auds, there are some things about ourselves we just don't want to admit to, so that it's only until our third Nabokov book that we are forced to take a long, hard look at ourselves! (As opposed to a long, hard look at pubescent girls!)

Although I should say that writing about pubescent types doesnt make one a nonce--necessarily (although it IS suspicious). Possibly he was more interested in the psychology of nonces and fetishizers of youth than he was in their objects of interest, like when I was into serial killers, I was much more fascinated by their groupies than by the killers themselves.

Nicky Wire outgrew his communist phase. I think he said something about how we're all communists when we're young. I think he's basically a wholesome humanist so I'm not bothered about his politics whatever they happen to be. His brother is a huge pro pal though, unfortunately 😕

As for Matt goodwin, you should know who he is since he is the most important political commentator in britain right now!

I am inordinately proud to share my birthday with him!!

Sorry for the self-absorption. I did wish you a happy birthday; I only inserted my own as a "playful dig" at someone else who might be reading it, in reference to a different thread (take my word for it: not worth your time) to see if they would or wouldn't respond to me (they said they wouldn't) and I'm pleased to see that so far they haven't. Since it matters, I apologize for using your birthday for something that doesn't involve you.

Don't politics matter, though? I find that a person's politics usually, though not always, reflect their goodness or lack thereof.

That's better! You don't usurp nice girls birthdays!!

No, dreaminess is much more important!! anyway, I don't need to know nicky wires politics to know if he's good person or not, that's SO dumb and divisive, audrey! I KNOW nicky is a good person already no matter what he believes!! (Reasons: he loves his mom; he loves labs and wiener dogs; his endless loyalty to richey)

This feels strange to write after 250 years or whatever it has been, but it's time for me to leave Solo. I've realised that I've been here too long, been too invested in things I can't control, and basically just stayed beyond any point where I was really enjoying the forum. The 'interview' was a line in the sand - it killed the very last drop of empathy I had for M and his label situation but it also made me look at myself and re-evaluate what I give my time to. Following all the ups and downs of the last 10 years and then dissecting each inevitable disaster hasn't put me in a good headspace; I feel like the M story is a long road to nowhere now and I want to get off the bus before I become one of those users who is just Ctrl+Ving the same anger in every thread and spoiling it for new fans. Thank you for some good conversations over the years.
I'm sorry you are feeling so down, Amy. I have enjoyed posting with you despite a bumpy start, which I think we overcame. Don't be too hard on yourself, you are honestly one of the best posters here and I really don't think you spoil anything for new fans or any fans, but you have to do what's best for you. Wishing you all the good things and best of luck and loads of happiness in whatever you do.

It's certainly been a frustrating ride these past few years. I totally get it and I've enjoyed your posts and insights along the way. Wishing you all the best, and respect for saying bye.

Thank you, and yes I think we overcame it. The line in the sand is different for everyone but I want to be someone who just likes the music, now. I feel you can be so wrapped up in a person's ways that you start taking on those behaviours and I could see myself doing it - complaining about his complaining, etc, etc. Morrissey is so chronically unhappy and l don't want to 'absorb' any more of that.

I don't have the willpower to disappear overnight but for me, even learning to "lurk" would be progress. Just being able to hover and check out again without feeling compelled to get knee-deep in the 50-page analysis of every little thing. I think there are quite a few users in that boat with me as well, too. To move to lurking, and then just cut down and fade out and be able to get to a point where you might check in once a year... that is the goal!

The Manics being an “edgier version of U2” is the worst thing I’ve ever heard.

U2 were hateful enough as they were, but that little stunt a few years ago when they raped our iPhones and imposed their stupid album on everyone… The absolute arrogance!!!

There are many pleasant people here, but none of them have the insight or razor sharp way of cutting through the bullshit like @Amy. She is the last truly sane voice here. Losing her would be a tough blow. But she made a very strong case. It should give more of us food for thought. In fact, I think it has.

Just when you thought stupid f***s couldn’t get any stupid-f***ier.

Those seem like painfully low-bar reasons. I'm sure there are a ton of terrible people who love their mothers and dogs and are loyal to a friend. I'm not saying politics are everything. But generically speaking, I think a person's politics are an important consideration in their goodness, because politics is (ultimately) about what kind of society we want to live in.

I thought it was the random internet commentator "Richard P." who called them an edgier version of U2, but I now see that it was forum member Luxo. Richard (who really hates Nicky Wire) called them "a poor man's U2," which is completely wrong. I can kind of see Luxo's point, though, at least in the lyrics and the political posturing. They are nowhere near as annoying, self-serious, or messianic as U2, though. U2 are profoundly unlikeable. They're the rock-star version of a punchable face.

im thinking i need to change my 4yos viewing habits

giant chicken with lots of death

For what it's worth, Amy, I'm pleased I decided to "lurk", not that I even lurk much. It's good to avoid some things, and more often than not it's the negativity that got to me, the bitchy comments. The poor spelling and grammar as well - it's a joke, folks. It takes a certain type of stamina to continue and I don't have it, thankfully. I've been reading the book below. I thought it was about something else.

Oh, good! I’m relieved. When you said “someone” I thought you meant someone important, not a forum member… 🤷‍♂️

I want to live in a society full of nickys!!

But what if Nicky Wire is pro-trans kids and would vote for Justin Trudeau? I thought that was the kind of society you're against: a "totalitarian hellhole," according to Jordan Peterson, who I just learned has moved the U.S. in order to escape it.
