A Taste of Honey Still Sweet Half a Century On

'Hard to believe, but this year Tony Richardson’s wide-eyed 1961 ‘neo-realist’ masterpiece A Taste of Honey, based on a play by Salford playwright prodigy Shelagh Delaney is half a century old.

Filmed on location in lyrical black and white when Manchester was still connected to its chimney-stacked ‘dark Satanic’ past, it tells the story of Jo, a gawky, dream-filled, pregnant, unmarried working class teenage girl thinking about life and thinking about death and neither one particularly appealing to her.'

Former Smiths frontman says high court appearance is chance to 'clear my name' over alleged racism accusations

Excerpt:

Press release:

Strangeways here he comes

Fans of The Smiths have a chance to be locked up with ex-band member Mike
Joyce for a few hours as part of a unique fundraising experience taking place in Manchester’s Northern Quarter this December.

The British Red Cross is holding a ‘jail and bail event’ on December 1 and in return for raising as much as possible for the charity, fans can have the opportunity to be locked up with one of their all time heroes and raise money for a good cause at the same time.

The event is taking place at the Manchester Police Museum. On arrival guests will be welcomed and booked in by a police sergeant. Fingerprints will be taken and crimes noted! Guests will then be escorted to the genuine 1895 courtroom and put on trial for their crimes. They will be then sent down to spend time in the authentic police cells where Mike will be among the inmates. On their release, guests will be treated to a drinks reception and the chance to...

If it was April 1st I would think this is the best made-up headline ever.

Here is the link to go have a good chuckle (the visuals are classic as well.)

The latest issue of 'Music Week' (dated 21.10.11) has a project profile of The Smiths 'Complete', which consists of an interview with Dan Chalmers, boss of Rhino Records. He says that the project had been in the planning for over ten years but it wasn't until Johnny Marr went into Metropolis Studios in 2008 to set about remastering the tracks that the project took off. Regarding Morrissey, this ~

"There has been no official word, yet, from Planet Moz, but, Chalmers says, 'We hear he likes it. Seymour [Stein] took a copy to him a few weeks ago and we are told that the view was really positive"

Seymour Stein is president of Sire Records, v-p of Warner Bros. Records, signed The Smiths in the US, etc, etc.
