Not only in terms of atmosphere, but the weather as well. Sorry to you people living in the Southern Hemisphere but it’s about 11 degrees celsius here, the leaves have turned orange and are falling off the trees, it’s perfect. I always loved it. There’s loud fireworks going off as well across the street but that’s more of a recent thing around here and I can take or leave that, although they are spectacular to look at.
Some of my earliest and fondest childhood memories are in this season. I remember being five and my best friend at the time was three and lived a few doors down, and around this time of year we’d go and lie among the trees near my parents’ house late in the afternoon and let the falling leaves land on top of us. It was so simple yet so enjoyable. Although there was an Alsatian dog who lived nearby who we were both afraid of, so any time he’d appear we’d get up and run away.
At Halloween I mostly liked to dress up as a zombie with a mask, ripped clothes and fake blood, but there were a couple of occasions when I dressed up as the devil and Dracula. Admittedly, the anticipation leading up to Halloween was usually better than the day itself. The last time I went trick or treating was in 2002 with two friends, and at that stage we were getting a bit too old for it which an old woman in one of the houses commented on and refused to put any treats in our bags.
Something else I like about Halloween is that it’s the holiday that requires the least amount of effort, in the sense that unlike Christmas and birthdays you don’t feel like you have to get involved with anything, you can just sit back and enjoy the atmosphere of it. And in the back of your mind you know it’s getting dark earlier and we’re about to face into five months or so of cold weather which is my personal weather preference.
I’m not sure what else I want to say about Halloween right now except man oh man do I love this time of year!!

I didn’t know until a couple of nights ago that the guy who produced and co-wrote these Girls Aloud songs also co-wrote Cher’s ‘Believe’, a song that was the bane of my existence in 1998/99. I’ve tried to warm to it recently since enough time has passed but my judgement of it is still coloured by how overplayed it was 25 years ago.
I remember being at a post-season disco for a football (soccer) team I was playing for, probably towards the end of 1999, and being bored senseless by the fact that they seemed to be playing ‘Believe’ repeatedly along with ‘Blue (Da Ba Dee)’ and ‘Mambo No. 5’ over the speakers. At that stage I was already sick of all those songs and so were the two friends I was standing with. We were ready for the next big thing to come along and hit the charts, which turned out to be, what, Westlife or Cliff Richard’s ‘Millennium Prayer’ or something?! Swiftly followed by Mark McCabe’s ‘Maniac 2000’; just endless aural trauma. ‘Maniac 2000’ was #1 on the Irish charts for 10 straight weeks! It ruined Michael Sembello’s ‘Maniac’ for me for many years, just like Tom Jones (and The Cardigans, but mostly Tom Jones) ruined Talking Heads’ ‘Burning Down the House’ and then Will Young cruelly disrespected the musical legacy of Jim Morrison with his version of ‘Light My Fire’. Who on earth greenlit that, anyway? He destroyed it. I have never fully been able to enjoy the original because of it, due to the Will Young version being the one I heard first.
As for ‘Believe’, I’m not able to get past the negative feelings I have associated with it, and when I made a list of my favourite singles from 1998 a few months ago I never even considered including it. But if I’m ever sad enough to extend that 50 song list to 75 songs, I might squeeze it in!
Do you know what else was the bane of my existence in 1998?! The sexually suggestive songs that would come on the radio while I was in the car with my parents. I can think of three such songs from that year which created plenty of awkwardness for me. I’d stare determinedly out the car window or suddenly become very interested in my jacket’s zipper when they came on, pretending not to be aware of anything suggestive with the lyrics.

At first I wasn’t aware of what “horny” meant of course, but then one day I was sitting in a friend’s kitchen playing a computer game with him and I can’t remember if Horny ‘98 came on the radio or if we spontaneously began singing it, but either way we were loudly singing that song and his mother walked into the kitchen and glared at us, at which point we promptly shut up. It was then that I knew that “horny” meant something that was taboo to someone my age. Looking back, I may have just thought it was another one of those “crazy” songs that appeared to have nonsensical lyrics, such as “what’s she gonna look like with a chimney on her” (from ‘Feel It’ by The Tamperer ft. Maya, also from 1998).

I can’t imagine what it would have been like to be 9 years old in 2020 and have ‘WAP’ come on the radio while in the car with family — did they actually play that on the radio during the day?! It makes ‘Sex on the Beach’ and all that seem twee in comparison, although not when you’re 9 (or 8 1/2) .

So for the first trailer they went with Tom Perry’s ‘Love Is a Long Road’ from 1989 as its accompanying song, which works. When I was thinking about it a few months ago I thought they should go with Def Leppard’s ‘Rocket’, also from ‘89 (that’s when it was released as a single anyway, it first came out in ‘87 on the album Hysteria). The above trailer would have to be redone to fit with it, but I still prefer my choice of song!
(Not that I have anything against the music of Tom Petty, when I eventually get around to making my ‘favourite singles of 1989’ list, Runnin’ Down a Dream is likely to be in the top 5– ahead of Rocket.)
This was my first attempt at screen recording anything, I probably should have done it in landscape mode rather than portrait mode. There was a couple of songs I really should have got, particularly the second song in the quiz, but I couldn’t think of it in time. I had to remove two songs from the video before I could upload it to YouTube due to copyright strikes. I ‘cheated’ by pausing the quiz a couple of times towards the end to see if I could think of more of the songs before the time ran out, and I thought of one more that way. I wonder if anybody is actually going to watch this video?? It’s 20 minutes long!
