and maybe i'm being presumptuous but i would wager that ambivalence doesn't exist so strongly among minority communities in places like dearborn who have yet to "earn" the ennui that accompanies a certain economic and social status in america. if palestine is an issue that motivates them, trump is clearly the superior choice in that "this" wasn't happening in quite the same way during the four years of his first term.

I'll admit I don't know how informed the average Arab-American voter is, but I would think they'd at least associate Trump with his provocative moving of the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Obviously not a genocide, but his rabid support for Israel is well-known. His daughter is a convert to Judaism and he appointed his son-in-law Jared Kushner as special envoy to the Middle East. I would imagine the Abraham Accords are about as popular with diaspora Arabs as they are in their nations. They are clearly cynical deals cut with the ruling oil oligarchs and fat royal families, who can be pacified with suckling at the U.S. money teat—at a complete disconnect from their populaces who don't get to enjoy such cash benefits. Jordanians when polled recently were something like 60% pro-Hamas. October 7th is believed to have been strategically planned to cut off a normalization deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia. Biden was the one to suffer October 7th, but Trump's policies may've well contributed to it.

I dislike Trump and I would never vote for him. However, he was so right when he said that it was a horrible idea for the Kamala to have Liz Cheney in her campaign. I hope the democratic party understands that you can't appeal to so called moderate republicans. Trump understood the assignment and appeal to his own people. That's what you have to do.

I’d love to agree with you because Trump is a charlatan and I allowed myself to believe in him for about 18 months eight years ago and I refuse to do so again, but you’re being hysterical. If you had said “they can’t or refuse, rather, to see what he might do in the name of helping Israel achieve absolute power in the Middle East”, then that would be closer to the truth. (Except they don’t refuse to see that and they embrace it for the most part, and would refuse to condemn it no matter how many casualties there are as with the past 13 months in Palestine.) They can’t see whatever it is you’re talking about domestically because it’s almost certainly not going to happen, and that includes mass deportations. Just like ‘The Big Beautiful Wall’ didn’t happen after his election in 2016. When it comes to carrying out those sorts of policies at home he’s completely useless just like all conservatives. “Owning the libs” is about all his supporters will get on that front.

I was just thinking earlier when I noticed letuknow’s account got restricted that he might have thought I was you. I had my suspicions about who that was as soon as he signed up last week and immediately started thumbing people down, and the account being restricted all but confirmed those suspicions. But I had thought “if it’s him, why did he like one of my posts, while waiting for the dessert to come out at Nobu presumably?”, and the conclusion I came to was that he didn’t take note of the name before liking the post and was thrown off by this glorious new display picture. Of course, there was also the time a couple of days ago when I thought you were me! Or did I think I was you? It was something like that!! I’m loving this new look and not being immediately recognisable any more. As for both being unpopular, you said nobody would even care but I would have liked to think that when they see the display picture some might have to glance at the name to check “which of those two people - both of whom I dislike - is this ?”. And then get mad when they see who it is, no matter which of the two of us it is!

Whilst the optimism of writers such as Lionel Shriver is very welcome - that this is a rejection of DEI identity politics - I do wonder is it too early to be so optimistic? Polling shows that people who are 'believers' in this stuff, with pronouns in their email signature etc., are about 20% of the population. But they are a very powerful 20%. They tend to be middle class, university educated, and work in public administration, education, healthcare, legacy media and journalism. I think they may double down on this stuff, doing everything possible to 'trump' Trump, to sabotage his administration, and bide their time for the mid-terms and then 2028, hoping for the inevitable swing back to the Democrats, with a candidate who can actually communicate and 'connect' with people.
And here in the UK, of course, we labour under Stalinist Starmer, complete with show trials and political prisoners.
