Morrissey pays tribute to Irish bodyguard in The Smiths glory years

The lead singer was devastated when Jimmy Connolly, The Smiths’ former head of security, resigned to give more time to his family.

Tributes have been paid to a Dubliner who served as head of security for The Smiths at the height of their fame in the 1980s and befriended Morrissey, the band’s lead singer and lyricist.
Jimmy Connolly, from Lucan, toured the world during the 1980s with the Manchester rock band. He stayed a close acquaintance of Morrissey during the singer’s early solo career, before leaving the entourage for family reasons following the death of his first wife.
His funeral was held last Wednesday at St Mary’s Church in his native Lucan after he died “peacefully but suddenly”, according to RIP.ie. He was in his early seventies.

On Saturday night, I went to the Dublin Castle, a pub and music venue in Camden, north London, the fabled birthplace of Britpop. I definitely wasn’t there when Blur were born; I feel sure I would have remembered. But I was there the night a guy set his hair on fire because he was trying to make a girl smell his shampoo and he accidentally leaned over someone lighting a cigarette. So that’s going back a few years.
