Is How Soon Is Now The Best Smiths Song? - Radio X

"Morrissey has a bad night out on this epic Smiths song, which saw Johnny Marr’s guitar virtuosity take centre stage. Since its release in the summer of 1984, the song has become a rallying cry for the lonely and awkward, its depiction of a social misfit at odds with the trendies and cool kids becoming an iconic moment in its own right. But for what was to become one of the most famous Smiths songs of all - and quite possibly a contender for the band’s very best recording - the track had something of an inauspicious beginning."

An article with video links to all the material that inspired the creation of the song.

When The Smiths were fronted by a 1960s era female popstar - Post-Punk.com

Excerpt:
"Morrissey and Marr having the strong desire to be recognized professionally as great songwriters not unlike Burt Bacharach and Hal David who wrote Shaw’s first hit, began writing her letters asking if she would cover their song I Don’t Owe You Anything, which they had written and composed in the hopes that Shaw would agree to perform it.

Shaw was initially reluctant to accept the offer being averse to the controversy surrounding The Smith’s track Reel Around the Fountain.

Despite this, Morrissey and Marr persisted in trying to recruit Shaw to perform their music, and Shaw was eventually won over by Morrissey’s praise of her in the press by the intervention of Rough Trade label founder Geoff Travis."

Press release:

Manchester map pays homage to the streets of The Smiths

On first inspection it looks like a regular map of Stretford. But look closer to see how streets are named after Smiths songs.

There’s The Queen is Dead Road, Cemetry Gates Street and Paint a Vulgar Picture Avenue.

Regular street names have been changed to the legendary band’s song-titles in this stunning work by artist Youngerman.

Called “Back to the Old House” it features all 73 Smiths songs, names of band members and iconic locations or themes relevant to the group such as Gladioli Avenue and Wilde Street.

But Smiths fans will have to be quick to get their hands on the extremely limited edition work - only 150 have been produced.

Youngerman said: “Back to the Old House fills the real streets around 384 King’s Road, Stretford with the songs and band members of The Smiths.

“The letter M - for Morrissey and Marr - marks the exact spot where their incredible song-writing union came together.
