The Smiths photos that got pulled because the NME said they'd 'never be big enough'

This week marks 36 years since their first live gig at Manchester's Ritz.
We spoke to photographer Kevin Cummins about his work with the band.

Excerpt:

"At the time they were a breath of fresh air, we'd had a couple of year of New Romantic style bands like Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran, much poppier bands who were the kind of thing your kid sister would like," he says.

"Then suddenly The Smiths came along and The Jesus and Mary Chain and they had a lot of presence and influenced a whole generation."

by Seymour Stein (Author), Gareth Murphy (Author)

Description:

The autobiography of America’s greatest living record man: the founder of Sire Records and spotter of rock talent from the Ramones to Madonna.

Seymour Stein is America's greatest living record man. Not only has he signed and nurtured more important artists than anyone alive, now sixty years in the game, he's still the hippest label head, travelling the globe in search of the next big thing.

Since the late fifties, he's been wherever it's happening: Billboard, Tin Pan Alley, The British Invasion, CBGB, Studio 54, Danceteria, the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, the CD crash. Along that winding path, he discovered and broke out a skyline full of stars: Madonna...

New biography: "The Smiths - Songs about your life" by Maciej Koprowicz (Apr. 20, 2018, Poland)

A new biography about The Smiths, "The Smiths. Piosenki o twoim życiu" (eng. "The Smiths. Songs about your life"), will be published on the 20 April 2018 in Poland. It was written by Maciej Koprowicz, a journalist of Antyradio.pl, an alternative music radio station and website.

Here's some information I found about the book:
“The Smiths. Piosenki o twoim życiu“ is the first polish book about The Smiths, which discusses their history, recordings and their huge impact on pop culture. It was written based on hundreds of press and online interviews and articles, as well as other publications. The title also includes information found in Morrissey’s and Marr's autobiographies, making it one of the most up-to-date books about The Smiths. The biography includes photos of the band and reproductions of album and single covers, as well as a complete discography. The last chapter entitled “The Smiths a sprawa polska" (eng. The Smiths connection to Poland), shows the influence of...

I wish all music magazines/newspapers would archive things for us to reminisce over.
Here is Number One Magazine from 30 years ago today (12, March 1988) which gives a little musical snap shot of the more 'pop' side of things (with an indie lean) 45p!!!
I'd urge anyone interested in music of the 80's to dig through all these issues. The classifieds & adverts are a nostalgia overload :)

I bought this magazine a few times myself - simply for the Morrissey bits.

*UPDATE*

Turns out Shane is a very busy guy and has a vast archive of complete Number One Magazine in a digital format. I haven't the time to go through every one as there's so many, but I'm sure Moz features in others:
