Your favorite songs of 2024

I wasn’t sure whether to include that Lago song but something told me you’d like it. I nearly replaced it with EABS - Flair but instead I added both. I agree that Fievel Is Glauque could end up sounding dated in a few years, which has been a problem for countless bands this century.

Months ago I found a mix CD that I made when I was a teenager and I listened to some of it; one of the songs was ‘Bandages’ by Hot Hot Heat from 2003 which sounded HORRIBLY dated— much more so than bands from the 80s or 90s, I thought. Many of those early 21st century bands do not hold up at all. As I sit here now I can’t even put my finger on what it is, whether it’s more of a production issue or songwriting/talent, or all of the above. Part of the problem as well probably was that bands like that were *trying* to sound cutting edge, with abrasive guitars and shrieking vocals, and it got old fast. That’s not the same issue that Fievel Is Glauque face with their sound but instinctively I get what you mean about that.

Speaking of Stereolab, here’s another song from this year which reminded me of them, I thought I was hearing traces of ‘John Cage Bubblegum’ in it:

Yeah I get the Stereolab vibes, with that kind of motorik beat, that Lab pinched from NEU.
The reverberant guitar and vocals also made me think of Pylon, though not as aggressive as them. Dummy had a more naive indie or innocent thing going on.

Oh I liked the EABS too. 70’s Fusion vibes those horn arrangements and that solo horn going off into space, the held out droning synth strings is really nice, trippy.

I haven’t heard the songs you posted but I’ll check them out later today. I’m glad you liked or found something of interest in some of what I sent you Zoom, thanks for listening :blushing:

Yeah, don’t know if you’ll care for the Congotronics stuff, pretty aggressive, but I thought you might dig it after you sent me the Lago track, which is kinda on the same tip. But definitely check out that Colin Stetson Bandcamp link, they’re longer moody pieces.

Seems like such an underrated song off of the album. Did RS tell Tim Burgess something along the lines of that it’s likely no one’s favorite song? Or did I mishear? It’s definitely one of my favorites. Perfect mix between melody and pop and gravitas and depth.

He said something along the lines of the theme of the song was explored on the 2004 self-titled album and he first attempted to express the meaning of the song with the song Lost (and Labyrinth, too, makes sense).

I remember him saying it was the song that took the longest for him to write the lyrics for and to express the notion of different versions of yourself occurring throughout the passing of time.

Brigitte Calls Me Baby - Always Be Fine.

The strongest cut on the album, by far. It’s scary how much he sounds like a young Elvis on this one. Reminds me of stuff like Harbor Lights, I’ll Never Let You Go, My Happiness, etc. and it’s a fantastic song in its own right.

Yeah, I got an Elvis vibe right away. I'm especially fond of the opener, The Future is Our Way Out.

Another good one, as is Fine Dining.

☝️That’s the type of Jazz I like the most, anything in the vein of The Peacocks by Stan Getz & Jimmy Rowles, You Don’t Know What Love Is by Sonny Rollins, and Bernard Herrmann’s Taxi Driver theme which causes images from Chinatown and Taxi Driver and Rear Window to flash through my mind while I’m listening :hammer: (which the above piece doesn’t achieve on the level of the others I mentioned, but it comes closest from what I’ve heard this year).

I don't listen to lot of new music, but:
A Fragile Thing - The Cure
Alone - The Cure
however, through my friends I re-connected with here in my homeland of SoCal and my students, there are 2 newer artists I really like
Chappell Roan and Night Club, but I have no idea when the songs I heard actually came out
