Indie bands, one-hit wonders and more - Edge Hill University's musical memories revealed

1: The Smiths
Manchester’s legendary partnership of Morrissey and Johnny Marr swept into campus, complete with obligatory flowers, for a sold-out show in November 1983 just days before their debut appearance on Top Of The Pops to perform This Charming Man. Alumni Sarah Riley said: “I remember the Students’ Union had to buy the flowers and I thought what a waste when he flung them all over the stage.”

Fellow alumni Adam Marsh who took the pictures featured added: “I had the good fortune to witness The Smiths, on the brink of fame, playing our college canteen. Beads, flowers, stage invasion, This Charming Man (twice). Anyone remember those curtains?”

What’s it like to write one of the most recognisable guitar riffs in rock history? This time round we’re on tour, as Sean visits Billy Duffy of The Cult for a rare interview on Billy’s Staffordshire farm. Armed with his iconic Gretsch White Falcon, Billy has become something of an icon himself. He covers a lot of ground, from breaking into Iggy Pop gigs as a youth to his best-known work with The Cult.

YT short with Morrissey mentions:

Don't think this was shared here at the time (October 19, 2023).

Duff FB linking.
Don't remember Fry helping with introduction.

More rap. He feels like a black Morrissey apparently.

I think it must be the most iconic image of the Smiths. But why? It’s just four lads standing outside a building.

I love it, but why? What’s so good about it?
