At immense expense to myself I bought this LP on import in 1976, played it once, and threw up: sixteen clumsy and drab. As impetuous then as I am now, I hurled off an irate review before nightfall to The Melody Maker. In those coach 'n horses days it took two weeks for a letter to arrive, and two more weeks to shamefully see it printed. By this time, I had fallen deeply in love with the Ramones. At birth, my name was Steven, but as a dribbler I could not pronounce the name and could only gurgle "Dee Dee", thus in my first years of life I was called Dee Dee. You see the Ramones connection. I wish my parents had continued to call me Dee Dee. It's too late now.
Back in 1976, I would not only visit CBGBs, but would later see the Ramones on their first visit to Manchester on May 22 (whee!) in 1977. The crowd came to sneer and stayed to weep. Joey was the funniest man in the world; Johnny's unendurably loud guitar was essential...
