Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I've always wondered what happened with Gary and Spencer, why were they sacked?
Which time?
From the morass of stated fact from such sources as
Mozipedia by Simon Goddard and the tittle-tattle of second-hand, third-party allegations that have passed through the wires over the decades:
Pre-
Vauxhall sessions, Morrissey decided that they weren't up to the task for the less "hard-and-fast" fare on the new sessions. He had Boz enlist the Bridgwood & Taylor rhythm section in their stead. Apparently, this was followed by Gary taking issue and carving "Die Wanker!" in Morrissey's front door. They were brought back in the fold to record "Moonriver" and "A Swallow On My Neck" as B-sides in early 1994 and they also appeared with Alain (oddly, sans Boz) on the
Top of The Pops appearance for "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get." Morrissey elected not to tour
V&I in 1994 and, by fall, Bridwood & Taylor were back for the "Boxers"/"Sunny" session and, subsequently, the aborted Miraval sessions for
Southpaw Grammar. In a funny reversal, Morrissey then decided TAYLOR wasn't up to the task for the
more "hard-and-fast" fare and rehired Spencer for the "Introducing Morrissey" tour and
SG.
Bridgwood is on the record as having gotten bored with each successive album after
V&I and a royalty dispute over the
Introducing Morrissey video release was the final straw. Spencer also apparently had royalty disputes which prompted a reputedly infamous, anti-Semitic fax from Morrissey. That was the end of the line for them.
By 1999, with tempers apparently cooled (and, frankly, with Morrissey short a bass guitarist), Boz arranged to bring Gary back into the band and he was a fixture again until fall 2006. Having started a family, Gary apparently asked for a raise and was summarily dismissed. Something along the same lines later resulted in Mikey Farrell's departure prior to the
Years of Refusal sessions. Bridge-burning was in the air, as this was allegedly followed by the Boss directing Boz to dismiss Alain from the
YoR sessions in the recording studio parking lot. That required 12 years, give or take, for fence to be mended and then less than two for the muckabout manager to blow up again, apparently for good.
