"I am an animal" - Nature Notes

It's been discovered that mushrooms are more animal than plant, and share more DNA with humans than with plants.

More interest in fungi is being shown these day, and notice is being taken of experts like Suzanne Simard, Paul Stamets and Merlin Sheldrake.

I recently joined others interested in knowing more, and came away with a closed recycled tub of chopped straw packed tight between thin layers of mushroom spore/spawn. Evenly-spaced holes were drilled into the sides about half way up. The instruction was to keep the container in a completely dark warm place for about 3 weeks, and then move it to a cooler shaded location which, if not definitely humid, had to be misted with water a couple of times a day.

I reached the second stage about 10 days ago. I took this photo showing the baby mushrooms 'pinning' 3 days ago.

I took this photo yesterday.

I'll try post another one in next few days. 🍄

What kind of mushrooms are those? They look somewhat like shiitake (one of my favorites), but I thought shiitake only grew on oak.
They're oyster mushrooms, I believe. First time I ate some, with trepidation, was on a pizza in the place Morrissey liked in Rome, outside which he's pictured under the alley arch. If we share that much DNA with them though, do you think it's a case of, meat is murder? o_O

Good to see that picture again just now.

Mushrooms aren't sentient (so far as we can tell) so mushrooms are not murder. Glorious picture.

Are they growing on plastic? Is thst how they're normally grown? Did you grow them purposely or did they just happen to grow there?

The prominent Canadian-American anti-whaling environmentalist Paul Watson has been arrested in Greenland under an international arrest warrant issued by Japan, police and his foundation said.

In a statement, Greenland police said Watson, who founded Sea Shepherd and was a co-founder of Greenpeace, had been arrested after arriving in Nuuk on the ship John Paul DeJoria. He will be brought before a district court where police will request his detention “before a decision is made on whether he should be extradited to Japan”, they added.

Also, eradication of most vultures in India by chemical poisoning, as usual failed to take unintentional consequences into account, not to mention species-ism, and may have inadvertently caused the death of half a million people

This is a red panda. Serious steps are being taken in Nepal to keep its kind from going extinct

Farm animal welfare is going the other direction, if the latest report on cruelty to pigs is anything to go by

Do such stories reinforce theories asserting that humans are not a species like others in essential ways?

"At an April 2024 meeting at New York University, 39 prominent scientists from different disciplines issued "The New York Declaration on Animal Consciousness," emphasizing "strong scientific support for the attributions of conscious experience to other mammals and to birds" and "at least a realistic possibility of conscious experience in all vertebrates (including reptiles, amphibians, and fishes) and many invertebrates (including, at minimum, cephalopod mollusks, decapod crustaceans, and insects)."

The declaration, signed by 480 scientists as of September 2024, further asserts that the evidence should inform decisions about the welfare of these sentient animals. Animal advocates welcome the declaration as progress but note that it includes an ethical dilemma by allowing the continuance of animal research into pain and permitting research in captive settings..."
