In that regard, Make-Up Is a Lie is less problematic than its immediate predecessors. Why even worry about that since he’s a singer and not a politician? Well, the years since whatever you regard as Morrissey’s last really great album – Ringleader of the Tormentors? You Are the Quarry? – have proved that while it’s quite possible to do without him altogether. There’s no replacing him. For those who have loved his work, there isn’t any other music that will give quite the same feeling as, say, “Now My Heart is Full.” There just isn’t. On Make-Up Is a Lie there often isn’t, either, but it has its moments. The album gets off to a promising start with “You’re Right, It’s Time.” Joe Chiccarelli’s production is among the best Morrissey has ever had, and the band is fantastic too. Brendan Buckley’s drums are crisp and he’s inventive whenever there’s an opportunity for it; Juan Galeano’s bass playing is noticeably superb throughout the album, as are guitarists Carmen...
