On the BBC Radio 2 Jeremy Vine show yesterday (10th July), Steve White, drummer for Paul Weller, Style Council, Oasis etc was interviewed. A caller, Peter Boita of Dulwich was on st 49:24 in the interview; said he was a session drummer and back in the day had been a "ghost" drummer on This Charming Man, William It Was Really Nothing and Nowhere Fast and another he couldn't remember for The Smiths. He mentioned that John Peel thought they were going to be the next big thing and the BBC producer (would that be Roger Pusey?) wanted help with the drums. Said he'd programmed the drums on Linn drum computer, then played it on a live kit at Decca West Hampstead, recording it onto something called SMS (a crude sampler) which was then triggered by the Linn computer (not sure I've got that right). The guy also said he created the drum ending to TCM. Steve then said he wanted to "shout out" to Mike Joyce. Who was this guy, and what was this ghost stuff all about? I'd just assumed that...

As Rough Trade turns 50, its founder, Geoff Travis, reveals how he signed so many big acts while Jarvis Cocker explains why he always wanted to be on his books.

In 1976, a former teacher from Finchley called Geoff Travis opened the Rough Trade shop in west London using a stack of records he bought in America and a £4,000 loan from his dad. Half a century later, Rough Trade is the most influential and enduring independent label in Britain. There have been important discoveries (the Smiths, the Strokes, Arcade Fire), once-in-a-generation voices (Sufjan Stevens, Anohni) and national treasures (Pulp, Scritti Politti). And it has survived against the odds.

“The label began in 1978 when [the French punks] Métal Urbain walked into the shop and asked for help,” says Travis, 74. “We released their single Paris Maquis and it all developed from there.”

“It’s one of those things where I really feel like he’s treated me like a real band member,” she said of her work with Morrissey. “It’s not like a hired gun thing anymore. I’ve been with him like almost four years now, and I’m writing records with him and stuff like that.”

She performed on Morrissey’s 2026 album “Make-up is a Lie,” and co-wrote several of the songs — including the title track.

“I never thought I’d be writing songs with that man when I was 16, listening to The Smiths,” Grey said. “So it’s a really incredible testament to who he is as a person who’s, you know, so mysterious and misunderstood. But he’s one of the kindest people I’ve ever met.”
