Subject: [M] The Other Jake

I was a bit shocked to find out that the other Jake, the rockabilly haircut one, died recently under mysterious circumstances... whether it was a suicide, or something else, no one knows. there was an article in the OC weekly describing his rise and fall, and it does have a one sentence mention of Morrissey and Boz visiting his barber shop for a cut, so if anyone is interested, go to:

"Live Fast, Die Young - the rise and hard fall of rockabilly barber Jake Bricks"

UPDATE (July 18)- From Anna, the story in detail, as it appeared in this L.A. Times article, May 13:

Garden Grove man grabs a gun from a deputy in Anaheim, flees in a stolen car, then shoots himself.

I was looking through our weekly, the San Francisco Bay Guardian, and I came across an article entitled "Commercial Music - When does a song become an ad?" with the How Soon is Now? single cover featured. Thought I'd send you the link :)

Excerpt:
...This isn't the first time a song dear to my heart has been colonized by the auto industry. A lifelong Smiths devotee, I can still remember feeling shock and horror when the first chords of "How Soon Is Now?" boomed from a Nissan commercial. That commercial still makes me sad, not because I lost respect for the band but because the music and the message fused together irreparably. When I hear that song now, the plaintive self-mocking pain in the line "I am human and I need to be loved" is superseded in my head by the image of a sedan spinning jauntily.

According TO MTV.COM Henry Rollins mentions Morrissey in a one hour Comedy Central airing Aug. 11. Some details:
The gig was recorded at London's Dingwalls Theater last year during Rollins' "Think Tank" spoken-word tour. In the hour-long special, Rollins covers a variety of topics, including his roles in such films as "Heat" and "Lost Highway," his thoughts about former Smiths frontman Morrissey, and his memories of his first kiss.

"In the ninth grade, Hoppus discovered the Cure and the Smiths, and through their music he found solace. He reflects, 'That was the first time I ever felt comfortable in my skin.'"

Just received a flyer in the mail, here in New Jersey (Lyndhurst, to be precise) alternative rock club: Aldo's (located @ 749 Marin Ave, Lyndhurst NJ) will have a SMITHS night: Saturday July 29, and a MORRISSEY night Friday August 4. I frequent this establishment regularly, and Fridays are better than Saturdays. Saturdays are a bit dead.
