Smiths mention in Melissa Auf der Maur interview
From Susheel M.
Daswani:
Read
this on www.blamo.org/sp:
"Q:
Most of these songs are very emotional. Never mind
just playing the notes, the personal investment must
be considerable as well.
A: That is very true. Obviously I've been a big fan
of the band since before Gish, and I've
followed the career and the albums of this band very
closely. Being a girl who first fell in love with
The Smiths and The Cure and Tears for Fears, I
realized I've always liked the melancholy music. The
other day, in Albany [N.Y.], we were playing in a
mall outside a Sears and a Payless Shoes, a huge
mall setting and it's, like, silly and we're like
the weird punk rock people at the mall; you see old
ladies walking by. As soon as we start playing, the
whole cloud of intensity comes across and I realize,
"Wow, I'm playing in one of those bands that I
used to listen to," where I would dive into my
emotional dark side and turn to [the music] for
shelter. The last band I was in was a very different
emotional experience."
Glad to hear the Smiths influence extends to the
Pumpkins (my two favorite bands)!!

Morrissey mention in "Grown Up All Wrong" book
From Karen:
I found a
book called "Grown
Up All Wrong" by Robert Christgau, it's
about American popular music and it has a section
called "Blown Away: Nirvana" where he
mentions Morrissey.
"It's
impossible to hear deep into Nirvana's music unless
you take cobain's suffering seriously, and this, as
much as their inchoate-sounding punk-metal-pop
noise, is why the band quickly became a generational
marker. Most parents feel life just isn't that bad.
But their kids are convinced otherwise- starting
with what they (supposedly) deserved and didn't get
from said parents themselves. Cobain obviously
wasn't the first rock hero to find power in his
vulnerability- male fantasy figures from Elvis to
Michael to Eddie Vedder have invited mothering as
part as their natural shtick, and not to mention
wimps as out-front and various as Pat Boone, James
Taylor, Luther Vandross, and Morrissey. But no pure
rock and roller at this level of talent and
recognition has ever cried out for a hug as palpably
as Kurt Cobain".

Smiths "The Complete Picture" DVD out yesterday, Apr. 4
It came out
yesterday, Apr. 4 and I have been told it's on sale at
Virgin Megastore for $17.99. I also hear it's pretty
much a straight transfer from the VHS version and
doesn't even include an interactive menu.
