Jordiet writes: I´m just finishing my internship on a Spanish radio-station and we just got a promo cd-single (with no sleeve at all) of "This Charming Man", pointing that "The Singles" is going to have a major re-release next March 26th. We have no info regarding sleeve changes or track list changes, even though I guess that none of this will happen. I bet this is the regular intention of promoting The Smiths music to a younger audience. I hope it succeeds!

charles byron also writes: ...Look what I found while searching eBay for some Smiths material. Seems like Smiths' "Singles" is going to be released one more time in Spain.

This is a rock photographer (Jill Furmanovsky) who is selling her photos online (and also from a little shop in Islington, London). This one caught my eye.
Morrissey of THE SMITHS
Embarassing background and rather poor lighting, but Moz looks great. I was a very inexperienced studio photographer being entirely self-taught in that area, and still learning. I was so concerned about technical things that I probably didn't take much notice of him, but he liked the flowers.

20 x 16 inch museum quality fibre print from the original negative.

Clive writes: Mark and Lard [UK Radio 1 DJ's] played a cover of "There is a Light That Never Goes Out" by Friendship Seven this afternoon. Release date 23rd April. It sounds OK but more importantly I'd like to praise the efforts of M and L in keeping the Morrissey profile alive on UK National Radio. They take every available opportunity to mention or play Smiths/Moz songs [usually a game connection/link] and they are obviously big fans. You can hear the show live 'on-line' and read about the fella's at the link above. PS: I believe that 'Lard' used to play Bass for The Fall.

Holy Name also writes: The Smiths-friendly BBC Radio 1 DJ's Mark & Lard today played a cover of "There is a Light that never goes out" by the New York band Friendship Seven. The record is due for release in the UK in late April and received fair praise from Mark Radcliffe who said that although the original version could hardly be bettered, this cover version still "worked".

Stu also writes: I found out yesterday about a really dreadful cover version of There Is A Light... by a band called Friendship 7 which is out in the UK on Apr 23. It sounds like St Etienne fronted by one of the women out of the Human League, and is truly, truly awful. Marc Radcliffe and Mark Riley have been playing it on their Radio One show, and unfortunately seem to like it.

Craig is a poet writes: Johnny Marr will have his own segment dedicated to him on Channel 4's (UK) "All time top ten" series. It's unclear at what position Johnny is rated at on the top ten guitarists but the programme is on this Saturday (24th March) at 10pm.

SuedeStation also writes: On Saturday March 24 Bernard Butler (ex. Suede) will be appearing on the Channel 4 (UK) programme called 'Top Ten Guitar Players'. Please check your listings to confirm the time. Bernard will be discussing Johnny Marr...

Dagenham Dave writes:

Fortean Times, the UK-published 'journal of strange phenomena', gives a mention to Dave Alice's Morrissey-Diana prophecy website in issue 144 in its wry column The Heirophant, which puports to report on 'disreputable' subjects. The address is quoted and Moz is described as "singer in eighties indie band, The Smiths". The Heirophant adds some typically knowing observations "from his fortress of arrogance deep below the Himalayas".

Nice to see my fave artist unexpectedly cropping up in my fave monthly magazine about absurd goings on.

Idlewild: "100 Broken Windows" (Capitol) Frontman Roddy Woomble has a voice that could only lead to rock stardom - a sober but heartfelt inflection that {ecalls both Michael Stipe and Morrissey, while imitating neither. A -BMR
Joe Meza writes: There is another mention of Morrissey in STUFF magazine (April 2001). Apart from the Smiths "Meat is Murder" mention, they give Idlewild 4 stars, The review is:
Scottish rockers invoke the angst of Morrissey. Simple lyrics "I must be scared of something", "I'm just to gullible for words", "This stain will never come out" etc.
