Concert Notes
Speculation surrounds this concert. It is presumed to have been scheduled and taken place, but without The Smiths. The flyer below evidences the acts due to appear.
On the mdmarchive.co.uk (in response to the flyer), a guest suggests:
The Smiths did not play this show. First band on were White Savages from Glasgow featuring Douglas McIntyre, Graeme Skinner and Harry Travers two of whom ended up with Johnny McElhone in Hipsway following the Altered Images split. The Smiths were pulled as I recall by Altered Images following the controversy over some of the early lyrics... (Reel Around The Fountain, possibly). There was an almost incomprehensible Paul Morley review of this gig in the NME at the time.
Passions Just Like Mine suggests Altered Images may not wished to have been upstaged by The Smiths and then states an Altered Images fan (Steve Ughetti) asserts the concert did happen.
There is not a single primary source to validate this concert taking place with The Smiths in attendance.
In an archive copy of The Times (July 26, 1983), the concert is reviewed with no mention of The Smiths.
