James Timothy Hardin (December 23, 1941 – December 29, 1980) was an American folk music and blues singer-songwriter and guitarist. In addition to his own popularity, several of his songs were hits for other artists including If I Were a Carpenter, Reason to Believe and Misty Roses. Hardin grew up in Oregon and had no interest in school. He dropped out before graduating high school and joined the Marine Corps. He started his music career in Greenwich Village and Cambridge which led to recording several albums in the mid to late 1960s with performances at the Newport Folk Festival and at Woodstock. He struggled with drug abuse throughout most of his adult life and his live performances were sometimes erratic. He was planning a comeback when he died in late 1980 from an accidental heroin overdose.
