Dame Joan Henrietta Collins (born 23 May 1933) is an English actress, author and columnist. Active in film and television since the 1950s, she portrayed the glamorous schemer Alexis Colby in the soap opera Dynasty (1981–1989). She is known for her roles in cult films including Land of the Pharaohs (1955), Tales from the Crypt (1972), Empire of the Ants (1977) and The Stud (1978) and for television appearances in Star Trek (1967), Tales of the Unexpected (1979, 1980), Benidorm (2014–2017) and American Horror Story: Apocalypse (2018). Collins trained as an actress at RADA and made her film debut in 1951. After going under contract to 20th Century Fox, she starred as Evelyn Nesbit in The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing, Elizabeth Raleigh in The Virgin Queen (both 1955) and Esther in the epic Esther and the King (1960). In the 1970s, she appeared in several British horror films including Fear in the Night (1972), Dark Places (1973) and I Don't Want to Be Born (1975). Her part as Fontaine Khaled in The Stud and its 1979 sequel The Bitch led her to be cast in Dynasty; for her role as Alexis Colby, she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama in 1982. In the 2000s, Collins notably appeared in The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000) and the TV movie These Old Broads (2001) alongside Elizabeth Taylor, Debbie Reynolds and Shirley MacLaine. She made her comeback to mainstream television in the 2010s, taking on recurring roles in series including Happily Divorced (2011–2013) and The Royals (2014–2018). Her first starring film role since the 1980s was The Time of Their Lives (2017), and she has also appeared in various independent films including Gerry (2018). Collins is the recipient of several accolades, including a Golden Globe Award, a People's Choice Award, two Soap Opera Digest Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. She was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1983 and was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II for her charitable services in 2015.
