Profile

James is an indie / alternative rock group from the UK. Please do not use this profile for any other artists named James.

James was formed in Manchester in 1982 by founding members Jim Glennie, Tim Booth, Larry Gott, and Gavan Whelan. The group was signed one year later to Anthony H. Wilson's infamous Factory record label, but only a few years later were snapped up by the major label Sire Records Company. James' early 1980s folk / indie sound would garner them impressive underground status before they would become big chart toppers from the mid-to-late 1980s. 1989 single "Sit Down", issued by the seminal indie record label Rough Trade, reached #2 in the UK singles charts and, in 1991, was followed by the #2 album "Seven". The group continued to find success with the 1993 album "Laid", its simultaneously-recorded nocturnal sister, 1994's "Wah Wah", and 1997's "Whiplash" (released in 1997 just after the UK's mid-90s Britpop explosion.) The band released two additional albums before initially splitting up in 2001. James reunited in 2007 and remains active as of 2024.
