Do you consider Morrissey/The Smiths to be your favorite artist(s)?

Always different, always the same
I am just curious, of those who frequent this site, if you consider Moz/The Smiths to be your favorite musical artist(s) or not. Personally, I group together Morrissey and The Smiths as I like them both, and I consider them both my favorite artists. However, most of what I listen to these days is by others. I went through a long period in high school where Morrissey/The Smiths was almost exclusively what I listened to, though.

If you don’t, whose music do you prefer? Also, I understand that not everyone has a #1 artist, and many have several favorites instead.

Morrissey one of my favourite artists. But there are others.

Over a lifetime, no. That would be Marc Almond. But I have quite an obsessive mind when I get interested in something and at present it is Morrissey. I also now like The Smiths and regret not getting involved at the time. I remember hearing talk of "Meat is Murder" and thinking, so what? At the time I was a vegetarian whose job involved serving meals to a 99% carnivorous customer base. But I needed the job. So my thoughts were about dealing with this - doing something I didn't agree with in order to escape long term unemployment. And the music around me was not The Smiths. But reading about it all now, it sounds exciting. I try to catch up, but it's not the same.

Everyone should make a top-5 or 10 and then you will find out 🙂

For me it’s easy:

1. Morrissey
2. The Smiths
3. R.E.M.
4. Echo & the Bunnymen
5. David Bowie
Just thinking of this thing called 'pop music', and not the visual arts, literature etc. favourite artists would be - Elvis, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Jimi Hendrix, Iggy Pop, Joni Mitchell, David Bowie, Scott Walker, Morrissey, Kate Bush, Little Richard.

Thanks for posting this thread. I’ll have to take a stab at it.

I relate to the “obsessive mind” thing. I have gone through various musical obsessions and at each phase have considered that artist my favorite. When I was in middle school, U2. In high school, Morrissey/The Smiths. In early college, Ariel Pink. Currently I am becoming obsessed with The Fall, but I can’t make a verdict on where they rank until I finish listening to each of their 30+ albums multiple times. 😅

For several years I didn’t really consider myself to have a favorite artist. I listened to a lot of electronic music in college, and in the past few years I’ve gotten into hardcore punk and contemporary classical. If someone had asked me, just last year, who my favorite artist was, I don’t think I would’ve had an answer. Just in recent months have I decided that Morrissey/The Smiths are probably my overall favorites because my obsession with them was more intense than other musical obsessions I’ve had.

However, I honestly don’t listen to a to a ton of Morrissey/The Smiths these days. So maybe I shouldn’t consider them my favorites; I don’t know. But they certainly were my most intense musical obsessions, so that’s why I’m giving them #1 (for now).

A big fan of both Soft Cell and Marc Almond. Morrissey and Marc Almond - very different artists, and yet similar in many ways too. There is a similar 'outsider' sensibility to their outlook on life. And an acute awareness of the tragedy of existence.

Morrissey yes, Smiths not so much but still in the top ten. It does differ from time to time with Prince, Bowie, Adam Ant, Beach Boys getting close to the top slot but Moz is my true hero.

You're a solo artist kinda person ;)

Out of curiosity, did you get into Elvis because of his influence on Morrissey? I've never really listened to much Elvis, so I don't really have an opinion on him.
No. Contrarily, M's affinity for Elivs inspired me to like M more. Elvis was one of my first musical idols, and his vast repertoire, unique vocal and physical stylings and the doomed tragedy of his life, still have me enamoured. He was very versatile, at times gritty blues howling, at others delicate pop crooning, at others soaring opera. My favorite songs are Surrender, She's Not You, Such a Night, Im Coming Home and Heart Of Rome

Very cool, I'll have to check these out. I could totally see it going either way - Morrissey leading to Elvis, or Elvis leading to Morrissey. I've discovered many artists based on other artists' influences and vice versa.
