Morrissey Central "ANNIVERSARY/SADIVERSARY" (March 11, 2025)

It is now five years since the last Morrissey record release. On 20 March 2020, I Am Not A Dog On A Chain was released by BMG Records, who then dropped Morrissey. The album reached number 3 in the UK, and number 18 in the USA. No single releases were issued from this album.

There were 2 videos, 3 digital 'instant grat' releases from this album and a remix 'single'.
(Besides the album, selling physical products and gigging pretty much ceased during Covid).
FWD.

I saw this when I woke up on Central. Instantly made me sad. It's an amazing album. I love it. He has so much more to offer. He should not be without a record deal. :pensive:

This album should, no, must have resulted in a professional ban for Liam Lynch! Horrible artwork, horrible typography on the back, absolutely unworthy!

I’ve been waiting for today! More time since the last Moz LP than the entirety of the Smiths. Dark days indeed.

Unfortunate timing with the release happening at the same time as Covid, and I’m sure had the songs been written, with hindsight, he’d rather have released Dog on a Chain first, and then California Son could have just fizzled away during Covid.

Listened to it a few times back then and then didn't feel the urge to listen to the vinyl anymore. 2-3 more interesting approaches than his two worst records WPINOYB and LIHS don't make a summer. Far from the big hit some would like to see in it and tracks like TSOM and especially the bad Bobby show that he doesn't benefit from leaving his tried and tested paths either, as he's not a good improviser and doesn't have the band for it either. No wonder they then tried to make a fresh start with a hip producer and cool LA studio musicians. But that didn't work out either for well-known reasons and then back to Uncle Joe and on with the beat. No, certainly no reason to celebrate. Let's see if the Europeans get him a record deal.

It's a great record! It happened to be released (unfortunately) at the time when the Pandemic started more-or-less, correct? So...from the gate, I'd say there was much less attention paid to its release, and that's not because it was a Morrissey release. It's a total shame too, because that album has some wonderful tracks.

It's the last album with a great, great lineup (besides Solomon/Mando it was the same lineup throughout) who recorded three excellent albums (w/some really nice B-sides too). The first two albums (World Peace and LIHS) - both of which I really, really love - those releases coincided with the birth-year of each of my two children. Thus...when I needed a big push --- our man delivered once again [see what I did there??? :D] The lineup with Gustavo will go down as one of Morrissey's top 2 lineups (hopefully top 3 in the end because he keeps going strong now until he retires, whenever that will be).

Morrissey certainly was on a resurgence then. Not that he had stopped touring by any means, but the new material he was writing was edgy and fresh (I thought), with great drums, backing vocals, and awesome pianos. That's said lineup in action right there - how good those songs sounded, and the musical ideas themselves. I thought that Quarry through Refusal all had some great songs on them, but largely didn't really impress me. So, give it just a few years and Gustavo joins the band, and then we had a new direction. Those were some good days for Morrissey. :D

Reasonable assessment. 5 years on I find the album mostly forgettable except for Once I Saw…, which might be in my top 20 all time Moz tracks.

What was the remix 'single'?

50% decent
50% neither here nor there

I bought my copy on the saturday before lockdown started - he wasn't helped with that at all

The secret of Music must be in his top 5 worst songs

I disagree. WPINOYB is one of his best. LIHS starts strong but falls flat in the second half.

It's mostly a solid album with Jim Jim, the title track, What kind of people..., Knockabout world, Darling..., and My hurling days are done being the standout ones for me.

I do enjoy the last section of Love is on its way out and the, let's call it groove, of Bobby.

I lack the empathy and imagination to follow your comments on WPINOYB's world music outpouring, but this forum should be able to tolerate different opinions.
