"Sing Your Life" covered by Save Ferris
Thanks to Annie Mathew
for the info:
Save Ferris did an impromptu version
of "Sing Your Life," at the KROQ Acoustic Christmas on Saturday. Monique
Powell (lead singer) just sang the chorus part during the instrumental part of
"Superspy." Just wanted to pass it on. It sounded pretty good too.
A .wav file is available on "Well Never Mind"
if you want to hear it, thanks to Dolll:
I'm sitting home listening to KROQ's
Acoustic Christmas, and like, three minutes ago I was listening to Save Ferris sing... and
in the middle of the song, she started singing "Sing Your Life." I was shocked!
She sang a good portion of it. Anyhow, I thought it was neat.
I just put the wav up on my web page. You can get it here:

'Brit Girls' - Marianne Faithfull
Thanks to Naomi
for a report on the continuing 'Brit Girls' series on Channel 4 (UK):
One Moz appearance:
"The first record I ever bought was Marianne Faithfull: "Come And Stay With
Me". I loved the sound. I didn't know what the words meant; I didn't know what she
was singing - I was only six. There was just something that was grabbing me in."
The remaining two episodes in the series - Sandie Shaw and Lulu - will be broadcast next
Saturday.
"Lost" mentioned in Rolling Stone (German)
Thanks to Stefan Krix
for translating the following review:
In the December issue of the German
Rolling Stone I found the following review written by the long time Morrissey supporter
Wolfgang Doebeling:
Another great b-side, which demands a wider audience, is "Lost" which you can
find on "Roy's Keen" (Island) by MORRISSEY, which got the thumb's down by the
fickle English music papers. In former times he was so good in playing those ego-games,
for which you are rewarded by the "NME". Now he is just pissed off and doesn't
give a f*** about it. For ingratitude of that kind you get bad reviews, a maximum of three
stars. It's his own fault. Apart from that "Lost" is a wonderful elegiac, a
sweet and affirmative tune, in one phrase: Morrissey at his best. "Everybody's lost
but they're pretending they're not". Only Dylan moans better.

That "Swimming" backdrop
Credit goes to Jimmy McDonald
for figuring this one out:
The backdrop with Robert Wagner also
has Jeffrey Hunter in it. The picture is taken from a 1958 film called In Love and War. It's
about some WWII Marines and the women in their lives.
Jeffrey Hunter played the Captain of the Enterprise on the first Star Trek (Cpt. Pike)
before he was replaced by Kirk.
There were shirts available from this pic which was also the all access pass and the photo
pass. Shirts ran out in Hartford.

Moz is "Twisted"
Thanks to Erika for the
info:
New York Press, NYC's free weekly that
is just about an equal to the Village Voice, had a review (by Armond White) in the Dec 3-9
issue for a movie called "Twisted."
In the first paragraph, however, the reviewer talks of the Oliver Twist sample at the end
of Mozzer's "Billy Budd" and compares the songs' "affirmative action love
song/sob story" (his words) to the movie plot, which involves two gay white hustlers
who "succumb to urban cruelty". (again author's own words). He also mentions
"asshole character-study songs" (yep, his own words yet again)
"Spring-heeled Jim" and "Papa Jack" to further describe the film's
characters. A small mention, but funny in a badly juxtaposed sort of way.
"The Last Of The International Playboys"
Thanks to Matt for the
following:
...I just read a review of a band
called The Last of The International Playboys. They've GOT to be named (albeit
incompletely) after the Morrissey song ... the review:
THE LAST OF THE INTERNATIONAL PLAYBOYS - Vegas Jazz and Latin Lounge (CD,
Main Squeeze, Lounge)
Despite the fact that the lounge/jazz/swing revival has gotten out of hand, the music can
still be valid and enjoyable when presented in the right fashion. And believe me, these
handsome fellows are doing it right. Instead of simply jumping on the goddamn bandwagon,
this group of nine men is smart and inventive enough to inject their own unique energy
into a genre that can sometimes be pretentious. As a result, they have come up with a CD
that is both enjoyable in a retrospective kind of way, while still sounding fresh and new.
Fourteen sexy tunes including "I Want My Old Life Back," "Pas the Cous
Cous," and "Lance Chance to Dance." (Rating: 5)

Autograph Collector
Thanks to Todd Stephenson
for this item:
...in the January 1998 edition of
Autograph Collector, there is a thumbnail picture of Morrissey in NY signing an acoustic
guitar. It looks to have been taken in an alley by a stage door and there is a larger
picture of the guitar with autograph, the dealer in the magazine is charging $900.00.

"Brit Girls" featuring Sandie Shaw postponed
Thanks to Rachel Mckeon
and Naomi for the news that the
"Brit Girls" program on Sandie Shaw scheduled for the 29th had been postponed to
Dec. 13th for reasons unknown.
According to Naomi, "Instead we were treated to a re-run of a
programme on Herman's Hermits, providing yet another outing for Johnny Rogan's beard
(why?). Next week should be Marianne Faithfull, with Sandie following on
the 13th. Or Channel 4 might just decide to dedicate the whole evening to music
journalists... you never know."
* Updated the "True
To You" info page with a scan of the latest issue (9). Julia has been following
this tour since the beginning and should be home soon as the tour concludes in a couple of
weeks.
